The search for a Honduran-American family for Dayana “Diani” Gómez, 16, who disappeared Saturday morning, ended in tragedy. Her uncle, Dennis Gomez, found her body on Sunday. Officers said Monday that she died in a hit-and-run accident.
Causes of death
Dayana went for a run around 6 a.m. Saturday and she was found dead around 5:20 p.m. Sunday, according to Officer Kiara Delva, a department spokeswoman. Miami Fire Rescue personnel responded at 1200 NE 79th St., near the Pelican Harbor boat ramp, and pronounced her dead.
Investigation
Detectives are investigating the recent death of Dayana “Diani” Gomez.
Through tears in a Facebook Live video, Dennis Gomez said in Spanish that he and her wife found her shoes, her cell phone and other evidence scattered on the ground. He said his wife passed out before he saw her body. He had hoped that she was still alive.

Grieving relatives are near the area where they found the body of a 16-year-old girl who had disappeared Saturday morning.
Pathologists from the Miami-Dade County Coroners Department were investigating the cause of Dayana’s death. Detectives have not yet released a description of the car involved in the hit-and-run accident.
“She was a very sweet beautiful girl. We will miss her very much, ”wrote Nahun Gomez, a relative of hers, on a GoFundMe page.
