Davina Smith Biography
Mark Cameron, who has been married to Davina Smith, a Nine News reporter since 2010, was charged with rape last November.
The 43-year-old man is said to have assaulted the woman, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, in the early morning of December 2, 2018 in Sutherland, south of Sydney.
Police said the incident took place outside Cameron’s home in Cronulla
Police said the incident took place outside Cameron’s home in Cronulla, which he shares with Ms. Smith, who is pregnant with her second child, and her four-year-old daughter Rose.
“This is a serious complaint about the sexual assault of a drunk victim,” police said in court documents, according to the Daily Telegraph.
“The prosecution records in this case are extremely strong, as the defendant admitted that the crime was arrested under the court order that was approved.”
Cameron faced the local Sutherland court on Thursday over an attempt to change the terms of his bail so that he would not have to report to police every week.
The court heard that the reporting requirements interfered with family responsibilities while Ms. Smith was at work.
The lawyer for the father of one of them alleged that he had not contacted the alleged victim in two years, despite being released on bail in November 2020.
“There is no evidence of fears about the victim’s safety that cannot be mitigated by reasonable bail conditions,” police said in court documents.
Sgt. McGee, district attorney for the NSW Police Department, denied the request for bail, and Magistrate Joy Boulos denied it on the grounds that it was an “extremely serious charge.”
Cameron’s position in the Australian military was mentioned in court, but the post reported that Ms Smith was referring to his deployment to Afghanistan in social media posts.
Last year, Ms Smith wrote in a social media post about how she and her daughter were separated from Cameron, who was stationed in the Queensland Army due to the coronavirus border closure.
“We are no strangers to distance and separation, but this is unlike any assignment or business trip we have ever been on,” Ms. Smith wrote.
“Normal life as a military family is difficult, life as a member of the MWDU, a member with unaccompanied relatives, is more difficult.”
Cameron will reappear in court on April 1.
