David William Kahler is caught on video driving in what police say was a stolen car. California police shot dead a man who pointed a loaded gun at them in front of his terrified 7-year-old stepson, who repeatedly yelled, “He’s my daddy!” during the deadly confrontation, according to bodycam video.

A hotel employee had asked police to do a wellness check after seeing the 7-year-old for only about 30 minutes outside.
The footage shows an officer approaching the boy and asking where his father is, prompting the boy to say that his father was going to “go get a car.”
Police soon learned that the 7-year-old boy and his stepfather, David William Kahler, 30, had been involved in a car accident on a nearby freeway in a vehicle believed to have been stolen from Las Vegas, and that the couple had fled. standing before walking to the hotel, Burbank Police Lt. Derek Green said.
Kahler of Las Vegas had dropped off the boy at the hotel while he tried to get into several nearby vehicles before finally stealing a brown Honda Accord that eventually drove back to the Quality Inn, Green said.
Once back at the hotel, Kahler was confronted by police while in the Accord, the video shows. He pointed a loaded 9mm pistol at the police while an officer yelled, “Drop the gun!” According to the footage.
Kahler’s stepson yells frantically, “He’s my dad! He’s my dad! “Just before the shooting, show the video. Green says in the video statement that” one of the officers pointed his service weapon at the suspect and fired three shots. ”
The boy, who was being held by another officer, could be heard crying after the shooting and repeating, “No, no, no.”
Kahler was pronounced dead at a hospital. His stepson was unharmed and taken into protective custody, Green said. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office is conducting a criminal investigation into the incident, Green said.
Kahler had an extensive criminal history, including arrests or convictions for weapons, assault, robbery and drugs, Burbank police said.
