David Morris died

“HMP Long Lartin inmate David Morris died on August 20. The Prison and Parole Ombudsman was reported,” he said.

Morris had long maintained his innocence and last year a BBC Wales Investigates program questioned the security of the conviction.

It included interviews with two possible witnesses: one who said that he had never spoken to the police and the other who said that he contacted the police to report what he had seen, but no one called him.

South Wales police said they had spoken to the two men and sought the advice of the Crown Prosecution Service, who said no information had been provided to undermine Morris’s conviction.

Morris was arrested after the suspect finger wrongly pointed at Ms. Power’s lover, Alison Lewis.

Former policewoman Ms Lewis and her ex-husband Stephen, a South Wales Police officer, were arrested on suspicion of murder a year after the deaths.

Arrested

Lewis’s brother, Stuart, also a police officer, was arrested on suspicion of perverting the course of justice. All were released without charge.

In 2001, investigations into the murders were rekindled after an off-duty police officer claimed that he overheard a conversation about Morris and Ms. Power having sex.

This led to Morris becoming the center of investigations; he had previously given a statement to the police in the weeks after the deaths.

Jurors in Morris’s two trials, in 2002 and 2006, were informed of his previous convictions for violence. He was convicted of all four murders in both trials.

Morris was found to have lied about whether a gold chain found at 9 Kelvin Road was his; He swore that he was not ‘in my children’s lives’, but then admitted that he was.

He claimed that he initially concealed his relationship with Ms. Powers from the police, as it would have spelled the end of his relationship with his girlfriend Mandy Jewell, who had been best friends with Ms. Powers.

Problems were also found in Morris’s alibi in which he claimed that he had wandered the streets for hours after leaving the New Inn pub on the outskirts of the village of Clydach before arriving home at 3 a.m. when Mrs. Jewell let him in.

Ms. Jewell told police that she got home between 10:30 p.m. and 11 p.m. but she didn’t let him in; later in court she said that she did not know what time he had returned, but that she had let him in.

Jurors in Morris’s two trials, in 2002 and 2006, were informed of his previous convictions for violence. He was convicted of all four murders in both trials.

The Clydach investigation was the largest and most complex murder investigation ever conducted by a Welsh police force.
