Resume

This essay is a preliminary assessment of David Bearman as the leading archival thinker of the late 20th century. Bearman has revolutionized thinking in archival circles around the world by offering a defense of traditional archival notions of provenance, evidence, record, and contextuality that matches the noblest statements of a Hilary Jenkinson, and by envisioning a relevant, dynamic and future. committed for archivists to transform the information age into an age of records. The essay is both a personal reflection and a critical analysis. There are three main themes: an evaluation of Bearman’s ideas and their general relevance to general archival theory; a more specific exposition of the nature and importance of the University of Pittsburgh Project and where Bearman sees the results of it being the leading archivists and their profession and institutions going forward; and a critique of some of the implications, if not of conscious intentions, of his ideas and methods that seem to exclude the cultural, historical and patrimonial dimensions and uses of archives, public or private. The overall aim of the essay is to take archival discourse to the next stage by constructively challenging and critiquing, as well as extolling the work of this archival pioneer.

How Naylor had installed the lighting circuit around the King Harold pub?

Naylor denied wrongdoing and told police in the interview that he was an electrician with 50 years of experience and that he believed his job was “first class.”

Bearman’s attorney, Neil Fitzgibbon, said his client’s plea was an acceptance of “full responsibility” for Harvey’s death.

He said the father-of-three and grandfather was a ‘generous family man’ behind the ‘colorful character appearance’, who was close friends with Harvey’s parents and regarded the boy as a relative.

“He is a broken man, consumed with guilt for what he went through and, on several occasions since this tragedy, he has tried to kill himself,” he said.

‘No sentence can undo the evil he has caused or lessen the guilt he feels and, through me, he apologizes from the bottom of his heart for the pain he has caused the entire Harvey family. He hopes that one day the family can forgive him. ‘

Bearman, of Ardleigh Green Road, Hornchurch, Essex, also admitted to an electricity extraction charge, after an unmetered illegal supply was used to steal power for the pub, but did not receive an additional sentence.

Investigation

An investigation into Harvey’s death found 12 defects in the pub that posed a risk of injury, including electric shock, and 32 potentially dangerous defects, and one expert described it as “the most dangerous thing I’ve seen in 40 years.”

Bearman, who suffered an electric shock in the pub’s basement in May 2018, never hired a “competent person” to repair numerous electrical defects, the court heard.

“He [Harvey] was electrocuted as a result of the unsafe installation of a lighting unit in that yard combined with a catalog of electrical faults,” said prosecutor Duncan Penny QC.

In a statement on the impact of the victim, Harvey’s mother, Danielle Jones, said that she had lost hers “her perfect seven-year-old son.”

“We feel that life is not fair. We cannot describe how much we miss our loving, cheeky, happy, larger-than-life son.”
