Who is Dave Halls ?

Rust’s deputy director has been accused of making a number of gun safety-related mistakes in a previous production, and is also said to have made staff uncomfortable with his ‘touchy’ behavior.

The complaints against Dave Halls were made by prop maker and pyrotechnic Maggie Goll after working with him on a previous production with him on Hulu in 2019 called Into the Dark.wikipedia

In Goll’s statement to CNN, she claimed that Halls never addressed gun safety protocols in production meetings or when a firearm would be used on set.

Goll also said that another crew member told him to “watch out” for him, as Halls apparently tended to get sensitive around them.

His behavior on set may have cost Hutchins his life after he was identified as the crew member who handed Alec Baldwin, 63, the loaded gun that killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, 42. , according to court documents.

In reference to his experience in Into the Dark, Goll said that he had worked with Halls between February and May 2019, where he had forgotten to hold production meetings to follow standard weapons safety protocols.

Those stipulate that any weapon used on a set, real or fake, must be ‘presented’ to the cast and crew so they are aware of its presence and can follow other safety protocols.

“The only reason the crew learned of the presence of a weapon was because the assistant propmaster required Dave to acknowledge and announce the situation every day,” Goll said in the statement.

He also added that the prop master would scold Halls for not recognizing protocol.

According to his statement, the prop master ‘would announce every day when a weapon would be required in the chamber, the disposition of that weapon, be it a rubber / plastic replica, a non-firing option, or a’ cold ‘Functional option, but unloaded, which allows anyone to inspect said weapon before taking it on stage and presenting it to the talent. ‘

The prop master frequently reprimanded Dave for firing the talent without returning props, including weapon, or for failing to make safety announcements.

Another unidentified crew member had also said that Halls would only hold brief weapons meetings if necessary, but often wondered why he had them, as he said the protocols were the same as on any other film set.

Goll’s statement also added that she was told by a pyrotechnic that she would continue to work on set even after she had informed him of a medical emergency.

“ I told him they were free to film whatever they wanted, but there would be no fire or sparks etc, until the doctor, the fire safety officer and all my teammates were safe on set, ” Goll added.

She had also spoken about Halls’ misconduct which reportedly made other crew members uncomfortable.

‘On my first day back on the show, another member of the team told me to’ be careful ‘with Dave, saying that he was too physically familiar with the team, despite many rejections and complaints about unwanted and unnecessary touches.

“Nothing too extreme, but crew members of all genders and dispositions were uncomfortable with Dave’s touches on the back, waist, shoulders, etc.”

Goll said nothing has been done about her complaints, as far as she knows, after she submitted them to Blumhouse Productions and the Director’s Guild of America.

The allegations made against Halls come after Rust’s gunsmith, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, 24, was also criticized for her earlier behavior on set.

Gutierrez-Reed was also claimed to have given an 11-year-old child actor a gun

Gutierrez-Reed was alleged to have given a gun to an 11-year-old child actor on the set of Nicholas Cage’s The Old Way without properly verifying it, according to two production sources.

They added that he was loading blanks in an ‘unsafe’ manner and she was said to be a bit ‘careless’ with weapons.

On the set of Rust, she is said to have placed the three support pistols on a cart with Halls grabbing one of the charges given to Baldwin.

Halls had yelled “Cold gun!” after giving it to Baldwin to indicate that the gun was safe to fire.

Police Investigation

Baldwin then accidentally shot and killed Hutchins, in addition to injuring director Joel Souza after shooting at the camera.

Hutchins was later pronounced dead at UNM Hospital in Albuquerque on Thursday.

Baldwin addressed the tragedy on Twitter on Friday: ‘There are no words to convey my shock and sadness over the tragic accident that claimed the life of Halyna Hutchins, our deeply admired wife, mother and colleague. I am fully cooperating with the police investigation to address how this tragedy occurred and I am in contact with her husband, offering my support to him and his family. My heart is broken for her husband, her son and everyone who knew and loved Halyna. ‘

She then tweeted a Variety article titled Alec Baldwin was told the backup pistol was safe prior to the fatal shooting, the affidavit says.

He was photographed doubled over in pain Thursday after speaking with the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Department immediately after the shooting.

Meanwhile, a vigil was held in Santa Fe Saturday night to remember Hutchins, with hundreds of members of local entertainment unions showing up to pay their respects to him.
