Two people were arrested Friday morning in Indiana after a police officer was killed and another seriously injured in the line of duty Wednesday night in the southern suburbs.
ABC Fort Wayne affiliate WPTA confirmed that two people related to a Bradley police shooting were arrested in North Manchester, Indiana.
They were arrested at a house in the 1000 block of Bond Street.
Illinois State Police said Darius D. Sullivan, 25, of Bourbonnais was taken into custody around 9 a.m. Arrangements are being made to transport Sullivan back to Kankakee County.
Police are still seeking information on Xandria Harris, 26, of Bradley.
It was not immediately clear who else was detained Friday morning.
Bradley Police Sgt. Marlene Rittmanic and her partner responded to a call Wednesday night of dogs barking in an unattended car in the Comfort Inn parking lot off Route 50, the Kankakee County Sheriff’s Office said. They went to the hotel room where the owner of the car was staying when police say people inside the room started attacking the two officers, shooting at them.
Rittmanic, 49, was killed and his partner, Tyler Bailey, 27, was seriously injured. Bailey was transported to Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn, where he underwent surgery for serious head injuries and remained in critical condition Thursday at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.
The sheriff’s office was offering a $ 25,000 reward for the information that led to Sullivan’s arrest.
An arrest warrant was issued for Sullivan and Harris, according to the Illinois State Police. Harris is believed to have been in the room with Sullivan at the time of the shooting.
Anyone with information on the suspects is urged to call the Illinois State Police Hotline at 815-698-2315. Whistleblowers can also remain anonymous by calling that number or CrimeStoppers at (815) 93-CRIME.
“Please keep the officers, their families and the Bradley Police Department in your thoughts and prayers,” the sheriff’s office said.
The Kankakee County community is now coming together to mourn and find strength after this terrible tragedy.
“My son is a Bradley police officer and he was supposed to be on duty last night, and he took his last day of vacation,” Jackie Hammond said. “So we’re grateful, but again, it’s bittersweet.”
The incident appears to have been isolated and the police believe there are no further threats to the community.
Kankakee and Bourbonnais communities
Friends and community members mourned the loss as local residents hung blue ribbons and posters around town thanking the sergeant for her sacrifice. Violet pennants adorned the Bradley Police Station when the outer flag was flown at half mast.
“Just to remember the greatest cop of all time with the Bradley PD,” Jacqueline Jackson said, holding up a homemade sign.
Hundreds of people silently lined up to honor Rittmanic during a procession that passed through the Bradley, Kankakee and Bourbonnais communities.
“We never think much of these guys who take care of us until this happens, but I’m glad to see the involvement and the support,” said Doug Brown, who came to pay his respects.
“The people who are here to protect us have been taken from us, and it’s just not right,” added Carol Chapman.
Bradley Police Department for 14 years, and his niece said she had only five years to go before retirement
Rittmanic first became an officer in 2000 with the Iroquois County Sheriff’s Department. He had been with the Bradley Police Department for 14 years, and his niece said she had only five years to go before retirement. He leaves behind his wife, Lynette Stua.
The last time a law enforcement officer was killed in the line of duty for him in Kankakee County was in 1996.
“We are a community and we are here for each other in good and bad, but tragedy seems to pull it all out,” Chapman said.
Kankakee Mayor Chris Curtis released a statement about the incident on Facebook, saying:
