Who is Daria Jalali?

Daria Jalali Arrest warrants have been issued for two fired Colorado police officers involved in the harsh arrest of a 73-year-old Colorado woman with dementia.

Austin Hopp, 26, and Daria Jalali, 27, face charges in the arrest of Karen Garner in June 2020 in Loveland, a city about 50 miles north of Denver.

Hopp faces charges of assault in the second degree, attempt to influence a public servant and official misconduct. Jalali faces charges of failing to report the use of force, failure to intervene and official misconduct.

They were among the three officers who resigned last month after a federal lawsuit filed by the woman’s family and footage of the incident sparked anger in the community and two independent investigations.

Hopp is seen in the body cam footage of her grabbing Garner’s arm and pushing her to the ground. He suffered a dislocated shoulder, according to the lawsuit.

Then separate surveillance footage surfaced showing Hopp and Jalali bumping their fists and laughing as they viewed the footage as Garner was locked in a jail cell in pain just a few feet away.

DailyMail.com later revealed that Hopp and Jalali are in a romantic relationship and moved in together while the former was still married.

Arrested and Charged

Hopp arrested Garner after she left a store without paying for a soda, a chocolate bar, a T-shirt and refills of wipes at a Walmart store.

Garner was detained by staff and asked to return to the store where the unpaid merchandise was recovered, but the employees still contacted police.

The charges were confirmed by Eighth Judicial District Attorney Gordon McLaughlin Wednesday afternoon. At the time of the press conference, Hopp and Jalali had not been arrested, but McLaughlin said they “had indications that they planned to turn themselves in.”

Camera footage of her body shows him reaching for her as she walked through a field.

McLaughlin said Wednesday that Hopp made “substantial omissions” in interviews about the arrest “in an attempt to thwart the investigation of her conduct.”

Victim

The dementia victim appears visibly confused and she repeatedly tells officers that she is on her way home in the footage.

“Ma’am, I don’t think she wants to play this way,” says Hopp. ‘You just left Walmart. Do you need to get arrested right now?

After she pulled away from him, she quickly grabbed her arm and pushed the 80-pound woman to the ground, pictures show. She suffered a dislocated shoulder, according to the lawsuit.

Garner is heard screaming in pain and confusion. She was then taken to the local police station, where she sat in a holding cell waiting to be reserved for six hours.

Then separate surveillance footage surfaced showing Hopp and Jalali bumping their fists and laughing as they viewed the footage as Garner was locked in a jail cell in pain just a few feet away.

During this time, he did not receive medical assistance despite crying in pain from the arm injuries.

Images show she screamed for help 51 times in the first hour alone as officers sat ignoring her just 10 feet away, the lawsuit says.

Who is Allisa Swartz?

The outcry over the way the woman was treated comes amid a nationwide settling of accounts over the use of force by the police, including against people with mental and physical health problems.

A person who answered the phone at the law firm representing Hopp said the office would not comment on the case. Court records did not list an attorney for Jalali, and the phone number listed for her did not work.

Allisa Swartz had told CBS This Morning earlier this month that her mother’s condition has worsened after the incident last June.

She said: ‘I think they need to go to jail. Yes. They must be held accountable ”.

Swartz said it was clear that her mother was “confused and scared” in the footage of the incident as she questioned how officers could not have realized that her mother simply wanted to go home.

She was confused and scared. She didn’t understand what was going on, ‘she said. The outrage over how the woman was treated comes amid a nationwide settling of accounts over the use of force by the police, including against people with mental and physical health problems.

Around the time of the arrest, Hopp, then married, moved into Jalali’s new home in Windsor, Colorado, where they lived together until mid-February, when Hopp suddenly moved out.

Exclusive images obtained by DailyMail.com taken on June 14, 2020, just days after they moved in together, show Hopp and Jalali sitting on the front porch and holding hands.

According to the divorce papers, Hopp separated from his wife for six years on June 7. She filed for divorce on July 8.

Several Jalali’s neighbors confirmed to DailyMail.com that Hopp and Jalali had been living together but were keeping secretive and not very friendly.

A neighbor said they have been living together in the house since the day they moved in last June.

But another neighbor said their romance was short-lived, as Hopp moved in in February.
