A 55-year-old man shot and killed a co-worker inside Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia before taking off in a U-Haul, shooting two officers and being beaten by responding police.

Shooting at the hospital

Around 12:08 a.m. On Monday, police received calls from Jefferson Hospital at 11th and Chestnut streets in downtown about a report of a shooter on the ninth floor.

Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw spoke to reporters shortly after 4:20 a.m. outside the Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where the suspect and the two officers were taken.

Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw provides an update on the homicide at Jefferson University Hospital and the shooting involving police.

Outlaw said the victim was a 43-year-old certified nursing assistant. She was pronounced dead shortly after being shot inside Jefferson Hospital.

The commissioner said it is unclear if the suspect was working at the time, but she entered the hospital wearing medical uniforms. He possibly accessed areas that only employees can enter, Outlaw said.

Police are investigating the past history between the suspect and the shooter.

“We think another employee was the target,” Outlaw said. “The reasons why, at this point, we still don’t know.”

Action News obtained the calls from police as the workplace shooting unfolded.

“In Jefferson, 9th floor, saying there is an employee who shot. Note that inside Jefferson Hospital, we have an active shooter. It’s going to be on the 9th floor. They have a man in a medical gown and a mask. Ninth floor, nine west, “the broadcast said.

Police said the suspect, who is also a certified nursing assistant, fled in a U-Haul truck. A chase was launched throughout the city in search of the suspect.

Shooting with the police

Outlaw said that around 1:25 a.m., about an hour after the shooting, a passerby called officers from District 16 at 40th Street and Parkside Avenue in the Parkside section of the city, near the School of the Future. It’s about four miles from Jefferson Hospital.

“The report was that there was a man in a robe, with a gun or a long gun, who was potentially firing rounds into the air or just had a gun,” Outlaw said.

Two Philadelphia police officers were injured in a shooting with a suspect who shot and killed a co-worker at Jefferson Hospital, authorities said.

According to the commissioner, arriving officers encountered the male suspect, who then began shooting at them.

Four of the officers responded to the fire.

Two officers were hit by the shots.

A 30-year-old officer was wounded in the right elbow. He is in critical but stable condition at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center. Outlaw said that he will need surgery.

Both officers, who have been in the force for six years, are expected to survive.

The other two officers who unloaded their weapons were not hit by shots.

The suspect was hit in the upper body and neck, Outlaw said.

“We learned that he was wearing body armor and multiple weapons. In addition to the long gun that was believed to be an AR-15, he was also carrying some kind of semi-automatic pistol,” Outlaw said.

Police say a man wearing a blue uniform, a mask and a black backpack shot and killed a person on the ninth floor of Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Center City.

The suspect was taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center in critical condition, but he is expected to survive.

“Therefore, we believe that we have no other criminals or shooting suspects pending from the Jefferson Hospital (incident). We are not looking for anyone else at this time and that is all we know,” Outlaw said.

The 40th and Parkside crime scene area remains closed, the commissioner said, as investigators wait for daylight to continue searching for additional evidence. Action Cam showed an officer looking over the U-Haul truck at the scene.

The identities of the victim and the suspect in the Jefferson Hospital shooting have not been released at this time.

Shootings in the workplace

This comes days after a deadly shooting inside an office building in the Logan section of the city. The victim, 25-year-old security officer Nassir Day, was shot in the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Day worked at Pathways to Housing, which provides services for the homeless.

Police found the suspect, Wayne John Dorylis, 59, armed with a large knife and detained him without incident.

“What can I say about this happening in such a short time? The good news is that we have both suspects in custody,” Outlaw said.

He continued: “When you think about this, this is something you would normally see in a movie or on a TV series. I’m happy, we’re all happy, that tonight’s injuries haven’t gotten more than they could have been.”

Outlaw was joined by officers, detectives, families and Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney outside the Penn Presbyterian Medical Center.
