Protests broke out outside the jail

At the press conference, Williams said that shortly after 4 p.m. On March 27, 2021, an officer was “invaded by at least one prisoner and taken hostage.” The radio and keys from him were taken by the prisoner, who released other prisoners who were in that capsule.

Sheriff Tommy Johnson III said there was a hostage situation that developed.
The Sheriff’s Department requested mutual assistance from the Oklahoma City Police. “They go and identify the suspect. They try to de-escalate. The inmate has the detention officer in a hostage position and something around his neck. Shots were fired, deadly force was taken, and the suspect was shot at the scene. We were able to get the detention officer out safely. ”Oklahoma City officers were among those who did the deadly force.
Oklahoma City Police Chief Wade Gourley said he only had preliminary information on the situation. “We went to the county deputies to try to help them resolve the situation … I’m glad the detention officer was not more seriously injured and that we were able to get him out of there and protect him.”
They did not reveal the inmate’s name.
Gourley said there were “several people involved” in the hostage situation. When asked if the situation happened due to the alleged conditions in the jail, authorities said they were still unable to speak to any of the inmates involved, so “it has not been established.”
