Dancing With the Stars’ Season 29 Week 9 Recap
Summary of week 9 of season 29 of “Dancing With the Stars”
After Chrishell Stause and Gleb Savchenko were eliminated last week, the couples who were still in the competition during week 9 were: Kaitlyn Bristowe and Artem, Nev Schulmann and Jenna, Justina Machado and Sasha, Nelly and Daniella, AJ McLean and Cheryl, Skai Jackson and Alan and Johnny Weir and Britt.
This week, the couples paid tribute to the musical icons of celebrities.
Justina Machado and Sasha Farber climbed first, paying tribute to Machado icon Madonna. They danced the rumba with “Crazy For You”. The judges thought her dancing was technically correct, but there was nothing “shocking.” They got three 8s for a total of 24 out of 30.
Nelly and Daniella Karagach danced in tribute to Tupac, performing jazz with “California Love.” For the performance, Nelly recorded a version of the song to dance to. They got 24 points out of 30.
AJ McLean and Cheryl Burke danced for Queen’s Freddie Mercury, prompting McLean to dance “hard”, as Mercury did on stage. They performed the Viennese waltz of “Somebody to Love,” which McLean dedicated to his grandmother, whom he called his “biggest fan” before she passed away in 2001. They got a 23 out of 30 after Carrie Ann Inaba gave them a 7 and Bruno Tonioli and Derek Hough each got 8 out of 10.
Kaitlyn Bristowe and Artem Chigvintsev danced the tango “Toxic” of their icon as a child: Britney Spears. Bristowe credited her love for Britney Spears with inspiring her to pursue her own music career and release a single that reached # 2 on iTunes. The judges loved her powerful performance, and Inaba (who’s been tough on her all season) even gave her a standing ovation. They got a perfect score: 30 out of 30.
Johnny Weir and Britt Stewart paid tribute to Amy Winehouse as their musical icon. They danced to “Valerie’s” brisk pace, and the judges said her brisk pace and character incarnation was “excellent.” They got a perfect score of 30 out of 30 for their first dance of the night.
Skai Jackson and Alan Bersten danced the pasodoble in tribute to their icon, Janet Jackson. The judges applauded her attack on such a mature dance and rated her performance a 27 out of 30.
Nev Schulmann and Jenna Johnson’s performance was inspired by their icon Elton John. Their jive was energetic and full of stage presence, and Tonioli called it a “fantastic” theatrical number. They scored 27 out of 30 and earned dance immunity for their top score on the leaderboard from last week. They also automatically earned 2 points.
For the dance portion of the night, Justina Machado and Sasha took on Kaitlyn Bristowe and Artem, dancing Cha-Cha to the beat of Lady Gaga and Beyoncé’s “Telephone.” The judges were divided in their decision, but they chose Justina and Sasha as the winners of the match, earning 2 extra points.
For the second dance, Skai Jackson and Alan danced salsa to the rhythm of Ricky Martin against Nelly and Daniella. The judges praised both pairs but gave the extra points to Skai and Alan.
Last but not least, Johnny Weir, Britt, AJ McLean and Cheryl clashed to dance to the beat of Wham! ‘S “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go”. The judges chose AJ and Cheryl for the two bonus points.
At the End of the Night, the Couple Eliminated Was…
… AJ McLean and Cheryl Burke.
With spectator votes and judges’ scores combined, the last two of the night were AJ McLean and Cheryl Burke and Johnny Weir and Britt Stewart.
Bruno Tonioli decided to save Johnny and Britt, and Derek Hough saved AJ and Cheryl, splitting the votes. In the end, it was up to Carrie Ann Inaba, who decided to save Johnny and Britt from elimination. The elimination of AJ McLean and Cheryl Burke meant they finished just before the semifinals.
The semifinalists competing next week are Skai and Alan, Kaitlyn and Artem, Nev and Jenna, Justina and Sasha, Nelly and Daniella, and Johnny and Britt.
