Who is Curtis Crosland ?

Curtis Crosland is a Philadelphia man who was convicted of murder and is released on evidence that has been on file for more than 30 years.

“I feel extremely happy, happy, that finally, you know … after 30 years or more, after constantly knocking on the door for someone to listen to me, that day finally came,” Curtis Crosland, of 60 years.

Murder charges

Crosland’s conviction, based on the testimony of two witnesses who later retracted statements they had made implicating him in the case, was overturned in June.

His firing came after months of work by the Philadelphia Conviction Integrity Unit, established in 2018 by Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner’s office. The unit was created to investigate allegations of innocence and wrongful convictions.

Crosland’s is the 22nd amnesty the unit has been involved in, according to a CIU press release.

Crosland was convicted in 1991 of second degree murder, theft and possession of a criminal instrument in the 1984 murder of a Philadelphia store owner.

Released after 30 years

According to the lawsuit, documents that could have helped absolve or exonerate him were on file with the Philadelphia Police Department and the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office from the beginning of the case.

The documents contained troubling information about the credibility of two key witnesses and police records pointing to another suspect, according to the lawsuit.

But that information was suppressed and there was no other evidence connecting Crosland to the crime, the CIU said in the press release.

He now he has returned home with his five children, his fiancee and his 32 grandchildren. “It’s a great feeling to continue being a dad, to be loved and wanted, and to have open arms to welcome you, that has been most of being exonerated, coming home to a loving family that loves and needs me,” Crosland said.
