The mother of a 14-year-old girl who was struck and killed by a speeding driver wants all drivers who cause fatalities to be banned for life.

Courtney Ellis was struck and killed by Brandon Turton who was traveling at speeds of up to 93 mph in a 30 mph zone in September 2020.

Liverpool Crown Court heard in September last year that the student, from Haydock, died instantly after being struck by the 21-year-old’s Renault Megane on Blackbrook Road in St Helens, Merseyside.

Causes of Death

Mr Turton admitted to causing the death by dangerous driving and was jailed for six years and nine months.

In sentencing, Judge David Potter said: ‘You were unable to successfully react to Courtney as she entered the road.

You were simply going too fast to avoid impact. Her dangerous driving cut short the life of a much loved daughter, granddaughter and sister.

She added: “I miss my little girl so much and I really need to succeed in this for her if it’s the only thing I can do for her, for myself, for my family and for future families who may unfortunately go through this too.”

Sharing some of the impact Courtney’s death had on her family, Ms Burke said: “My oldest baby witnessed it and suffers daily with PTSD symptoms and mental health. I wish I could take the pain away, but I can’t.” . I can only be there for her despite my daily pain and anguish as well. I just want to do at least one big thing so future families don’t have to go through the same problem as me and my family.’

A petition to impose a lifetime ban on killer drivers set up by Ms Burke has now received almost 12,000 signatures, with a goal of reaching 100,000.

In September last year, Ms Burke confronted the murderous driver in court when he was sentenced to nearly seven years in prison and told her: ‘I will never forgive you.’

Courtney’s mother said: ‘I don’t want her death to have been in vain. Imagine seeing the killer responsible for taking your son from you in a gruesome way walking around like nothing, it’s like rubbing it in my face.”

Turton, who admitted to causing the death by dangerous driving, wept when told of his sentence.

At sentencing, Courtney’s mother described the devastating moment she realized her daughter had been involved in the fatal collision.

Ms Burke told Mr Turton: “The night he killed my 14-year-old daughter was the most horrible experience I have ever had to go through.” It truly was a parent’s worst nightmare.

‘Having to see the lifeless body of your son mangled is indescribable. I was on my way home from work when I approached the scene of the incident.

She added: ‘It was clear something serious had happened, with police officers everywhere. I remember feeling sad for the people involved. Little did I know that my own son was lying in the road. I wasn’t there when she needed me the most.

Ms. Burke said that after driving by the scene, she received a call to tell her that Courtney had been hit, adding that it was at that moment that she realized that she had just driven past the scene of the accident.

The grief-stricken mother of four said she was “mortified” when she went to hospital but she “still had hope” before she was “destroyed” when doctors said she had died.

Ms Burke said she “broke down in shock” when she learned of the teen’s death.

Witness

Courtney’s older sister, Morgan, witnessed the horror crash firsthand and was “traumatized” by the incident.

Then she screamed, ‘Courtney, please don’t die, please don’t leave me.’

Ms Burke said: “It must have been really horrible for her to witness Courtney dead on the road.” They were inseparable, and for Morgan to wake up every day and not have Courtney around is heartbreaking.

We as a family are all lost. Courtney was so loving and sensitive.

She loved cuddles. Now I will never be able to see my daughter marry or have children of her own.’

Courtney also left behind a younger brother and sister.

Ms Burke said: ‘My youngest children say goodnight to Courtney’s pictures on my wall before they go to bed. They say “I love you” and blow kisses. I am devastated that they will never meet her older sister.

This witness described how he had been flirting with a woman in the Renault in whom Mr Turton had also been romantically interested. However, she had not reciprocated these feelings and it was “apparently that he was angry or jealous”.

Mr McIntosh also said that he had been “driving like an idiot”.

Courtney, meanwhile, had spent the afternoon at a nearby park with her older sister, Morgan, and a friend of hers. While the teen had been drinking, she described her to him as “just dumb” or “scatterbrained.”
