Cole James Bridges, a First Class Soldier in the US Army who is stationed at Fort Stewart, is charged with attempting to provide material support to ISIS and attempting to assassinate US service members.

As of at least 2019, Bridges allegedly began researching and consuming online propaganda promoting jihadists and their violent ideology. He also allegedly expressed his support for the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (“ISIS”) and jihad on social media.

Bridges then allegedly provided training and guidance to suspected ISIS fighters who were planning attacks, including advice on potential targets in New York City, such as the 9/11 Memorial, and also provided the ECO with parts of a manual on training the U.S. Army military combat tactics, for use by ISIS.

The Ohio native spoke to an undercover FBI agent when he thought he was planning an ISIS-inspired attack on the 9/11 Memorial and Museum.

He was also accused of plotting to attack other American soldiers.

“As alleged, Cole Bridges betrayed the oath he took to defend the United States by attempting to provide ISIS with tactical military advice to ambush and kill his fellow service members,” said Manhattan US Attorney Audrey Strauss. “Our troops risk their lives for our country, but they should never face such danger at the hands of one of their own. Today, thanks to the efforts of JTTF agents and detectives, and our partners in the Department of Defense, Bridges is in custody and faces federal terrorism charges for his alleged crimes. ”

According to the criminal complaint, which was released Tuesday in federal court in Manhattan, Bridges joined the U.S. Army in approximately September 2019 and was assigned as a cavalry scout in the 3rd Infantry Division. based in Fort Stewart, Georgia.

In or around December 2020, Bridges began providing the ECO with instructions to suspected ISIS fighters on how to attack US forces in the Middle East, according to the criminal complaint.

The complaint charges him with attempting to provide material support to ISIS, in violation of 18 U.S.C. 2339B, which carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison; and (2) attempt to assassinate members of the U.S. military, in violation of 18 U.S.C. 1114, which carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.

This month, according to the complaint, Bridges posted a video of himself in body armor standing in front of an Islamic State flag, making gestures of support.

A week later, Bridges posted a second video in which he used a voice manipulator and narrated a propaganda speech in support of the Islamic State group’s anticipated ambush of US troops, according to the complaint.

In a statement Tuesday, a spokesman for the Fort Stewart-based 3rd Infantry Division, Lt. Col. Lindsey Elder, confirmed that Pfc. Cole James Bridges is assigned to the division. He said the division commanders are “cooperating fully with the FBI.”
