A woman was stabbed and strangled by her ex-boyfriend in a “revenge attack”, a court heard.

Charles Jessop, 29, is charged with the murder of mother-of-two Clare Nash, 33, in her Newmarket, Suffolk flat on January 16, 2020.

They told the Ipswich Crown Court that Mr. Jessop was “jealous” about Ms. Nash’s new relationship, and that the police had visited her on the day of her death.

Jessop, of Bakers Row, Newmarket, denies the murder.

Prosecutor Mark Cotter QC said Jessop took a knife and cycled to Nash’s apartment, where he waited until she returned home before attacking her.

He said: “This was a revenge attack caused by the jealousy of a man who did not accept that Clare Nash had rejected him and entered a new relationship.

“The knife broke during the attack, which probably explains why he strangled her.”

Ms. Nash’s friend, Peter Claringbold, who lived with her, “was inside her and heard screams coming from the front door,” Cotter said.

‘Obsessed’

They told the court that Claringbold had heard Mr. Jessop yell “you’re going to die.”

He dialed 999, but Mrs. Nash was pronounced dead at the scene.

A pathologist could not say whether Ms. Nash died from strangulation or loss of blood, and her cause of death was recorded as a combination of the two.

Cotter said there were a “series of violent incidents” as the defendant’s relationship with Nash deteriorated.

When he started a new relationship, Jessop “was still obsessed” with Nash, he said.

Nash had spoken to police about him the morning of the day she died and the level of risk to her was assessed as “medium,” Cotter said.

“She recorded the problems she was having with Charles Jessop, but she did not want to make a statement,” she said.

She was “given advice” and agreed to email the police a recording of one of Jessop’s phone calls, but the recording did not arrive until the next day, “probably due to the size of the file,” the prosecutor said. .

Cotter said the defendant’s defense “would try to raise questions about his state of mind at the time of the murder.”

He would claim that an antidepressant drug affected him, Cotter added.

Cause of Death

He said there were a “series of violent incidents” as the defendant’s relationship with Ms. Nash deteriorated.

“By the time of the new year, Clare Nash had started a relationship with a man named George Petrie,” Cotter said.

He said Jessop “ kept obsessing over Clare Nash and kept bombarding her with phone calls, ” sending her 95 text messages on Christmas Day 2019 and another 174 over the next four days, threatening suicide if he didn’t see her.

The defendant became aware of Ms. Nash’s relationship with Mr. Petrie, who was also known as Barry, and this “put him in a jealous rage,” Cotter said.

Police who were called in for the incident on Brickfields Avenue heard Jessop say “I have won,” he said.

Hours earlier, on the morning of January 16, Nash had spoken to police about Jessop and the level of risk to her was assessed as “medium,” Cotter said.

“She recorded the problems she was having with Charles Jessop, but she did not want to make a statement,” she said.

She said she was “given advice” and that she agreed to send police a recording of one of Jessop’s phone calls.

An officer received an email from Ms. Nash at 8.29 p.m. of that day with her and Jessop’s contact numbers.

An email containing Jessop’s voicemail message did not arrive until the next day, January 17, “probably due to the size of the file,” Cotter said.

“By the time that file came through, Clare Nash was already dead,” she said.

She said the defendant is “trying to raise questions about her state of mind at the time of the murder.”

Jessop will claim that the antidepressant drug Citalopram affected him, Cotter added.

When he was interviewed the day after his arrest, Jessop claimed that he suffered from anxiety and thought that he might be schizophrenic.

Describing how he got angry, he said, ‘Sometimes the only way I can deal with it is to let my anger out.’
