Christopher Belter Crime
Belter could have faced up to eight years in prison for his crimes.
Judge Murphy told Belter that his eight-year probation would be “like a sword hanging over his head for the next eight years.”
‘I agonized, I am not ashamed to say that I actually prayed about what is the appropriate prayer in this case, because there was great pain. There was great damage. Various crimes were committed in the case, ” Judge Murphy said in the shocked courtroom.
“It seems to me that a sentence involving incarceration or partial incarceration is not appropriate, so I am going to sentence you to probation.”
Judge Murphy offered no further explanation for his decision not to impose jail time on Belter.
Christopher Belter Victims
One of Belter’s victims was heard crying as the judge read his verdict, while Steven Cohen, representing another of the victims, told the Washington Post that his client vomited after the decision.
He added: “If Chris Belter was not a white defendant from a wealthy and influential family, in my experience … he surely would have been sentenced to prison.”
Belter assaulted his four victims between February 2017 and August 2018, three of whom were 16 and one was 15 at the time of the assaults at his family’s ‘party house’ in a wealthy Lewiston neighborhood, a few miles from Niagara Falls.
During the case, the fourth victim gave a statement describing the assault on her, commenting that Judge Murphy said: ‘He told her to stop being such a baby … The defendant told her that if she stopped resisting, she wouldn’t do it’ it hurts so much.
Before sentencing, WKBW reports that Belter addressed the courtroom to reveal her “deep shame and regret” for her actions.
He said, ‘I hope each of you can heal the wound that I made. However, I know that a scar will remain that will serve as a reminder of the evil of that night.
Belter will appear in court again on December 3 so that a decision can be made on the level of s*x offender he will be classified into.
State Police say the 20-year-old’s mother, Tricia Vacanti, 50, stepfather Gary Sullo, 56, and a family friend Jessica M. Long, 42, allegedly groomed the four victims by supplying them with alcohol and marijuana.
Christopher Belter Charges
All three have pleaded not guilty to charges of endangering a minor and illegally treating a minor.
At the time of his guilty plea, Judge Sarah Sheldon, who has since retired, placed him on two years of probation, which gave him the opportunity to apply for juvenile offender status.
This would have lessened any possible prison sentences he might have received and prevented him from having to register on the s*x offender list.
However, Belter revealed in court last month that he broke the terms of this probation by installing software on his computer to view pornography.
