Who was Chris Kaba?
Chris Kaba, a 23-year-old rapper known as Mad Itch and part of the MOBO-nominated group 67, was shot after a police chase in Kirkstall Gardens, Streatham Hill, at around 9:51 p.m. m. last night.
Officers administered first aid at the scene before Kaba was rushed to the hospital, but he was pronounced dead just after midnight.
Speaking outside their home in West Dulwich, south London, parents Elaine and Prosper Kaba spoke about their devastation today.
Mr Kaba’s father said: ‘We just don’t understand what happened. Why didn’t they shoot him in the leg? They could have. Why did they have to kill him?
“I saw him earlier that day and he told me that he was going home to get something to eat and then he was going to a friend’s house.
I don’t know why the police would be following him. He was a good boy, he didn’t get in trouble.
“We just heard what happened this morning and right now we just don’t know what to think. Chris was the oldest of three brothers, he hoped to study at the university.
“He had a girlfriend and hoped to be a father in a few months. He was expecting a girl in November and was very excited to have a daughter.
‘He said he was eager to help her start talking and walking, all these fathering duties. Chris enjoyed life, he was always joking around. He had many friends.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct is conducting an investigation into the fatal shooting.
A 39-year-old man, who lives on New Park Road and asked not to be identified, said: “The (driver) drove down New Park Road and came to Kirkstall Gardens. A police car drove down Kirkstall Gardens and crashed into him.
Another police car came in behind him and he was locked up at the end of Kirkstall Gardens. The car was motionless when he was shot.
And he added: ‘The explosion was very strong. I was at home with my gaming headset and I heard it.
A woman who lives in Kirkstall Gardens, who wishes to remain anonymous, added: “I heard a big bang and then I went outside. From inside I could see blue lights and a helicopter. There were a lot of police.
“It looked like someone was lying on the ground and they were trying to tend to the person.” I have lived here for a year or so and have never experienced anything like this.
A second man who lives down the road said: ‘I heard what sounded like one or two shots and then a lot of commotion. I saw some police cars and then the main commotion was over pretty quickly.
Residents of Streatham Hill claimed officers performed CPR on the suspect after shooting him.
A statement from the IOPC said: ‘The IOPC has launched an independent investigation following an incident involving Metropolitan Police firearms officers in Lambeth, south London, last night.
“At this early stage, a man is believed to have been fatally shot during police response to reports of a suspicious vehicle.
“The MPS notified us of the incident shortly after 11 p.m. and we declared an independent investigation shortly before midnight.
‘IOPC investigators were dispatched to the scene and post-incident procedures to begin collecting evidence.
‘Our thoughts and condolences go out to everyone affected by this terrible incident. Our investigation remains in the early stages.
