Who was Chinmay Patel?
Chinmay Patel, 34, denied the charges but was convicted of two counts of rape and two counts of s*xual assault by a jury at Southwark Crown Court on Thursday.
The court heard that Patel contacted his victim on Shaadi.com, a matchmaking site for people of South Asian descent.
He raped her in her London apartment after she allowed him to stay on the couch before attacking her again the next morning.
Patel s*xually assaulted a second woman in Leeds after meeting her on the Hinge dating app. The court heard that he bit her and tried to separate her legs from her on July 7 of last year.
Patel was previously convicted of battery in April 2017 after shoving her partner against a fence around her, slapping her 12 times and yelling, ‘I’ll fix you when we get home!’
During Thursday’s court hearing, Patel’s victims read impact statements.
“The incident has ruined my life,” said the first woman, who has not been named for legal reasons.
‘I am not the same person I used to be, now I am very closed and protected. I feel vulnerable and insecure when I go out, I feel the need to check if he is behind me.
“I feel unsafe and in danger because he knows my address.”
The woman also told the court that she had to wait three months for the results of an HIV test after the rape.
The second woman, who was also not named for legal reasons, said in her statement: ‘I couldn’t look at my own body, I couldn’t even wash my own body without crying.’
Patel wore a gray prison sweater while he sat in the dock with a copy of the Bhagavad Gita, a fragment of Hindu scriptures.
Judge Michael Grieve, QC said of the first victim:
“You have ruined her life and caused significant psychological trauma.”
The court heard how Patel said ‘It’s not like I’m raping you’ to the woman when she refused to kiss him during her date.
They went out to eat and Patel tried to get her drunk with wine and sambuca, the court listened.
“He tried to kiss me, I said:” I don’t want to kiss, “said the first victim to the jurors. He put his hand on my top, I said no, he pulled it out. We kissed and he came to kiss my neck and bit it ‘ .
The woman said they left the restaurant in the wee hours of the morning and Patel got ‘grumpy’ when she refused to let him go to her house.
“He started saying that we have been arguing for an hour on the road, it’s cold, his sinusitis hurts.”
She finally agreed that he could stay on her couch when she claimed that she needed to pick up a friend from Stansted airport in two hours.
But once they were in her apartment, he looked around all the rooms before “rushing” into her room and pushing the clothes off the bed with a big smile, the woman told the court.
Attacked
He then attacked her a second time, jurors heard.
‘She wanted him to leave, she was saying that she was trying to see her friend that she would come to pick him up.
‘I was trying to normalize the situation so that I could heal my nerves, I was waiting for him to leave.
‘I didn’t know what to do and I didn’t want to leave my pets alone with him.
I texted my friend, I went to the kitchen, he was in the living room, I told him he was in trouble and I called her.
‘I was whispering, I said I had a date with this guy, I said he’s in the living room, I’m in the kitchen, things have happened.
“She didn’t know what she was trying to say.”
She added: ‘I remember feeling raped, forced, I was forced, I kept saying no,’ she said.
“It’s a fit, I say no, and she still undresses me.”
Patel, of Leeds, denied this, but was convicted of two counts of rape and two counts of sexual assault.
He was sentenced to 10 and a half years in prison and will remain on the sex offender registry for life.
A court order was also issued prohibiting Patel from contacting any of his victims, attending his address or creating a profile or sending a message on any dating website or app.
