Who is Cherelle Griner?

The wife of American women’s basketball star Brittney Griner is calling for her release from a Russian jail where she has been held for at least three weeks after being arrested at a Moscow airport for allegedly having a vaporizer filled with hashish oil.

“I love my wife with all my heart so this message comes during one of the weakest moments of my life,” Cherelle Griner posted on Instagram on Saturday night. “I understand that many of you have come to love BG over the years and have concerns and want details. Please respect our privacy as we continue to work to get my wife home safely.”

Arrest

Cherelle also thanked the two-time Olympic gold medalist and seven-time WNBA All-Star fans for her encouragement, saying, “Your prayers of hers and support of hers are greatly appreciated.”

Griner, 31, was arrested last month while flying to play for her Russian basketball team during the WNBA offseason, but the date of her arrest has not been confirmed. The last communication from her was on February 5 when she posted a photo on Instagram of her and her fellow Phoenix Mercury members.

Now Russia could use Griner as leverage, as she faces up to 10 years in prison on the drug smuggling charge.

“If we want him out of jail, Russia will have some terms,” former US Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Russia and Ukraine Evelyn Farkas told Yahoo Sports. It could be a prisoner exchange. They could also use it as an implied threat or blackmail to get us to do or not do something. Either way, they find it useful.

Texas Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, who represents Griner’s hometown of Houston and says she met the star when she played high school baseball, said during a news conference Saturday that she spoke with the State Department in an effort to free the WNBA star.

“We know there were some issues related to vape cartridges and other items, but let me be very clear,” Lee said. ‘Brittney Griner is a citizen of the United States, she was a guest in Russia…and I will demand her release.’

Attack

“I don’t want to ignore a sovereign nation, but Putin has ignored sovereign nations all his service in this world and whoever is killing, attacking and destroying Ukraine, his neighboring country, that does not bother them, he has no right to stop Mrs. Griner. Period,” Lee said. “If there are challenges and concerns about her actions, they should be dealt with diplomatically and she should be released.”

The congresswoman cited concerns for Griner’s safety, noting that Russian jail is “no place for her,” especially in times of war. Her concern stems from the fact that many have expressed fear for Griner’s safety while she was in custody in Russia, where President Vladimir Putin has enacted strict anti-gay laws.

“I think right now, in the midst of war, how dangerous Moscow is, how dangerous it is to be in Moscow prisons… it’s not the place for her,” Lee added. “I would call on Russia right now to really stop harassing American citizens, but more importantly, to release those who are there and not claim any advantage or any sense of character in the looting of murder. and terrorist actions against Ukrainians”.

Statement

‘Please allow Mrs. Griner to leave safely. She allows her legal representation to handle her affairs and requests that the United States pay special attention to all detainees in Russia at this time.”

In a statement to DailyMail.com on Saturday, Griner’s agent, Lindsay Kagawa Colas, did not dispute reports of her client’s arrest.

“We are aware of Brittney Griner’s situation in Russia and are in close contact with her, her legal representation in Russia, her family, hers, her teams and the WNBA and the NBA,” Colas said. “As this is an ongoing legal matter, we cannot comment further on the details of her case, but we can confirm that as we work to bring her home, her mental and physical health remains our primary concern.”

Charged

She was charged with “smuggling drugs in a significant amount,” according to Interfax, a crime that carries a sentence of five to 10 years in prison.

Griner, who is known for her sharp elbows on and off the basketball court, led Baylor University in Waco, Texas, to a national championship in 2013 before being drafted first overall by the Phoenix Mercury later that year. .

She averaged more than 15 points per game in 2014, the year the team won the WNBA championship.

The six-foot-nine-inch center was part of the 2016 US women’s basketball team that won the gold medal in Brazil and again won gold at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

In 2015, Griner and her then-wife, Glory Johnson, were suspended for seven games after being arrested and charged with domestic violence.

Griner pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct and agreed to six months of domestic violence prevention counseling, after which the charges were cleared, according to The New York Times.

In June 2015, after Johnson revealed that she was pregnant with twins after IVF treatment, Griner filed for Johnson’s annulment after less than a month of marriage.

According to Griner, she married Johnson under pressure and said she was not involved in her pregnancy.

Her divorce was finalized the following year and Griner was ordered to pay child support for twins Ava Simone and Solei Diem.
