Who was Charlise Mutton?

The estranged father of the former private student accused of Charlise Mutton’s murder has spoken out for the first time, as his mother also comes forward to defend the accused killer.

James Stein said that although he had never met the nine-year-old schoolgirl, whose body was found in a barrel near the Colo River, he was “heartbroken” by the sad news.

Stein revealed that he had not seen his son Justin, 31, who was charged with murder shortly after Charlise’s body was found, for “some time”.

Annemie Stein told the Daily Telegraph her Cranbrook-educated son had led a “tortured life” and said he did not approve of her relationship with Kallista Mutten.

Charged

Stein currently remains behind bars on remand, after being charged with the murder of his nine-year-old stepdaughter, Charlise (pictured), shortly after her body was found.

The couple shared a whirlwind romance and became engaged after just over a year together, with Ms Mutten, 31, now reportedly pregnant with Stein’s child.

“You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t force him to drink, or choose his mates, and sometimes he ends up with a headache like this,” Ms Stein said.

The 56-year-old said it would be painful for any parent to have a child go through what her child was going through because “parents know their children.”

Mrs Stein described her would-be granddaughter as a “lovely” and “beautiful” child who did not deserve to die.

His son currently remains behind bars in pretrial detention after being charged with the murder of his nine-year-old stepdaughter on Tuesday night.

Ms. Mutten left her daughter in her care last Tuesday, and court documents show detectives allege Stein killed her within 15 hours.

Family

Detectives haven’t had a chance to ask Ms Mutten key questions about the alleged events after the allegedly pregnant mother suffered a “medical episode” and collapsed one day searching for her daughter.

The wealthy Stein antiques family has owned the Wildenstein estate where Charlise vacationed with her son and her birth mother for two decades.

Justin’s older brother, James, and her husband, Keegan Buzza, currently operate the sprawling property as a wedding venue, and Stein’s younger brother stayed in a shack on the 12-acre property for the past few years. years.

The nine-year-old normally lived full-time with her grandparents, Deborah and Clint Mutten, in the Queensland border town of Coolangatta, but she came to Wildenstein over the Christmas and New Year school holidays.

Kallista Mutten had relinquished guardianship of Charlise after developing a methamphetamine addiction, failed attempts at rehab, and a two-year prison streak for killing a friend she threw into a river while under the influence of ice.

Death

Charlise’s remains remained in the barrel for five days as emergency workers searched unsuccessfully for the missing girl around Mount Wilson, 40 miles further west.

That was until the afternoon of Tuesday, January 18, when police, acting on GPS data, located the barrel in the bush and made the gruesome discovery of Charlise’s decomposing remains.

Police allege that between 7 p.m. m. on Tuesday, January 11 and 10 a.m. m. on Wednesday, January 12, when Mrs. Mutten is said to have been absent from Wildenstein, Stein murdered Charlise.

On Thursday, Jan. 13, Stein left Wildenstein’s Mount Wilson property in his Holden Colorado, police say, towing a boat carrying the barrel with Charlise’s body inside.

It is believed that a blue tarp was placed over the barrel of the boat.

Based on GPS data detectives later obtained from Stein’s cell phone and her ute, she allegedly made the one-hour, 20-minute drive to Marsden Park Bunnings.
