Chad Dorrill is the Appalachian State University student and basketball player who died of COVID-19 in September 2020. He was 19 years old.

In a statement, Dorrill’s mother, Susan, said her son was tired for two weeks before his diagnosis. Susan Dorrill said in part: “Little did we know that he was secretly attacking her body in a way they had never seen before.” She added that doctors said Dorrill was a case of 1 to 10,000,000. Susan Dorrill added, “If it can happen to a super healthy 19-year-old who doesn’t smoke, vape or do drugs, it can happen to anyone.”

The Watauga Democrat reported that Dorrill passed away on September 28 at the Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem.

One of Dorrill’s friends, Sydney Bell, paid tribute to the teenager by telling the Democrat, “He is the most selfless and kind person you have ever met. He goes out of his way to please everyone and make sure everyone is happy no matter what. to happen to him. ” Bell said Dorrill had been in the hospital in early September, but was released to go home on September 22.

The publication described Dorrill as “quiet” and “soft-spoken” but said he was a “fierce competitor on the basketball court whose tireless hustle and shooting skills helped win many games for the Pacers.”

The post went on to say that Dorrill was the Pacers’ all-time leading scorer and part of the 2018 United States Special Sports Association championship-winning team. Dorrill was “loved by all of his teammates” and ” He had all the qualities that any parent would love to see in their child. ” The team statement said Dorrill’s parents Robert and Susan were seen regularly at Pacers games and helped the organization forge a “family atmosphere.” The post ended with the words: “Our hearts go out to them and we can’t imagine the pain they are going through right now.”

Dorrill Was Studying to Become a Physical Therapist at Appalachian State University

Fox Charlotte reports that Dorrill graduated from Ledford High School in Thomasville, North Carolina, in 2019 and was studying to become a physical therapist at Appalachian State University.

During her time in high school, Dorrill competed in a math contest. In February 2019, Mike London of The Salsbury Post wrote that Dorrill wasn’t “exactly a rook, but he’s an effective post player.”
