Who is Carolyn Poitier ?

A Florida mother was caught driving 91 mph Tuesday, with her young children unrestrained in the car, police said.

Carolyn Poitier, 25, of Leesburg, was booked into the Volusia County Jail on charges of child neglect and possession of a controlled substance. She was released less than 12 hours after posting bond totaling $5,000.

Statement

According to a statement from the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, deputies took Poitier into custody around 12:30 a.m. for driving 91 mph in a 50 mph zone on International Speedway Boulevard in DeLand.

“Two children, ages 2 and 3, were asleep without safety seats in the front and rear passenger seats,” the agency stated.

When officers later pointed out to Poitier that if she had crashed at the speed she was traveling, she and her children likely would have died, the mother allegedly replied that she “wasn’t planning on having an accident.”

Poitier told deputies that she was driving from Leesburg to Daytona Beach and she left the child seats in another vehicle at home “because she didn’t want to strap them down while they slept.” Poitier was also not wearing a seat belt, according to the sheriff’s office.

Arrested and Charged

Poitier was booked into the Volusia County jail on charges of child neglect and possession of a controlled substance.

Photos that were taken by the arresting officers and released by the sheriff’s office showed one of the children curled up in the front passenger seat and the other napping in the back seat.

Later, another adult arrived on the scene with car seats and took the Poitier children home.

A search of Poitier’s car turned up pills later identified as the narcotic pain reliever Tramadol, according to the sheriff’s office.
