Cari Farver Wiki
Cari Farver Biography
Who was Cari Farver ?
A Nebraska woman posing as the love rival she had already killed spent four years sending hundreds of messages to the victim’s family and ex-boyfriend before the truth in the twisted case was uncovered.
Shanna Golyar, 45, is currently serving a life sentence for first-degree murder in the slaying of Cari Farver, 37, who was last seen in Ohama in 2012.
Golyar spent the next four years posing as Farver in text messages, emails and Facebook posts.
In an ABC 20/20 special airing tonight, Farver’s mother, Nancy Raney, and the victim’s ex-boyfriend, Dave Kroupa, spoke about receiving those messages and the harassment they suffered before authorities finally decipher the strange case of the love triangle.
Authorities say Golyar murdered the victim after realizing she had embarked on a relationship with Kroupa, a man with whom she was obsessed and she had been romantically involved with on and off for several months.
Golyar stalked Kroupa for several years and tormented Farver’s family, all while pretending to be the victim.
Kroupa had only dated Farver for two weeks before receiving a breakup text message from his phone number. The bullying that followed over the next four years was unrelenting, and Kroupa believed he was Farver the entire time.
‘I was regularly getting over 60 text messages, 100 emails a day. It wasn’t weird. As for phone calls, hundreds of hundreds. I changed my phone so many times it was ridiculous,” Kroupa told 20/20.
‘On one specific occasion he was sitting on my sloth with his feet up, watching TV, trying to relax. I get a text that says “I see you, you’re sitting in your chair with your feet up on a blue shirt.” Those things were true.
One message read: “I hate you so much I want to stick a knife in your heart.” Another said: ‘I will destroy your life and take away your happiness.’
In an attempt to throw authorities off the scent, Golyar went so far as to send threatening messages and emails about her that appeared to be from Farver.
Authorities became suspicious of Golyar after discovering major inconsistencies in his story. They eventually built a case against her that harvested cell phone data and IP addresses linking Golyar to Farver’s alleged messages.
Police also found Golyar in possession of two photos of body parts that showed identical tattoos to those Farver had.
Farver’s body was never found, but prosecutors believe the murder occurred in an Omaha apartment on November 13, 2012.
Investigators did not find a murder weapon or any witnesses.
Much of the case relied on circumstantial evidence linking Golyar to Farver, including his fingerprints on a pack of gum in her love rival’s car and a photo taken by Golyar allegedly showing Farver’s decomposing foot.
At his 2017 murder trial, Douglas County Assistant District Attorney Brenda Beadle called it “one of the most calculated and bizarre cases I have ever seen” in her more than 20 years working as a prosecutor.
