Who is Caleb Whisnand?

The five-week-old baby whose body was found buried in the Alabama woods two days after his parents reported him missing died of blunt force trauma to the head, leading to his father’s arrest on a capital murder charge.

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office announced Thursday that investigators recovered the remains of baby Caleb ‘CJ’ Whisnand Jr in rural Lowndes County, Alabama, late Wednesday, two days after his parents appeared at a press conference to pray for the safe return of your child.

The boy’s father, 32-year-old Caleb Whisnand Sr, was initially jailed on suspicion of reckless manslaughter, but authorities later said the charge will be elevated to capital murder based on evidence obtained during an autopsy.

Arrested and Charged

According to indictment documents cited by Montgomery Advertiser, CJ died of blunt force trauma to the head Monday between 3:45 PM and 10:49 PM.

Officials remained mum about the circumstances surrounding the baby’s death, citing the ongoing investigation.

Whisnand was arrested shortly after participating in a strange press conference about CJ’s disappearance with the boy’s mother, Angela Gardner. Gardner does not face any charges in the death of her son.

Elder Whisnand said during the press conference that he did not remember much and asked the public for information, including where he had been before the disappearance.

At the time of his arrest, Whisnand was already charged with unrelated charges of possession of methamphetamine and heroin, reckless endangerment and possession of drug paraphernalia stemming from an arrest in June 2020.

CJ’s maternal grandmother, Margaret Hope, told Al.com that her daughter was about to break up with Whisnand at the time of her son’s disappearance and death.

Whisnand was booked into the county jail on a reckless manslaughter charge punishable by up to 20 years in prison. His bail was set at $ 100,000.

‘I do not remember much. But I did remember that he was breaking up with the police. If someone has something, anywhere he could have gone, ” he said.

Gardner, 28, said her youngest son was with Whisnand and told him she realized the baby was missing when she went to pay at a gas station Monday.

“Please find him, please,” Gardner told reporters Wednesday afternoon.

Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Capt.Trent Beasley said authorities were alerted to the situation after receiving a 911 call Monday night from a store about the missing child.

Missing

However, a missing child alert from the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency said the baby was last seen at 9 p.m. Saturday.

And during Wednesday’s press conference, Whisnand Sr told reporters that the last time the whole family was together was Saturday night when “we were all sleeping together.”

Moments later, his girlfriend said that she was at home with her 2-year-old son on Monday and that CJ was with Whisnand Sr at the gas station Monday night.

Neither the parents nor authorities provided an explanation for the timeline discrepancy, nor did they address the baby’s whereabouts between Saturday and 10:45 p.m. Monday, when Whisnand reported him missing from the Circle K gas station on Wetumpka Highway.

According to an affidavit filed in the case Thursday, CJ was killed sometime between 3.45 and 5.30 p.m. Monday, hours before Whisnand made the call to police.

The man allegedly buried his murdered son in a remote area about 30 miles southwest of the gas station in Montgomery.
