Who was Caleb Solberg?
A fatal hit-and-run that stemmed from a fight between friends over mayonnaise ended with a western Iowa man sentenced to life in prison.
Kristofer Erlbacher, 29, of Woodbine, was sentenced Monday to mandatory life in prison after being convicted in December of first-degree murder in the 2020 slaying of Caleb Solberg, 30, of Moorhead, the Des Moines Register reported. .
Investigators said the men were eating and drinking at a Moorhead bar on the night of Dec. 17, 2020, when Erlbacher put mayonnaise on Solberg’s food. A fistfight ensued between the two men and Erlbacher drove off in his truck, threatening to hurt Solberg and others. The threats included calls to Solberg’s half-brother, Craig Pryor, whom he later confronted and whose vehicle he rammed with his truck.

Prosecutors say that later that night, Erlbacher saw Solberg outside a cafe in nearby Pisgah and ran him over with his truck. He turned around and ran over Solberg two more times to make sure Solberg was dead, authorities said, and called Pryor to tell him he had just killed his brother.
Erlbacher unsuccessfully tried to reduce the charge to second-degree murder, arguing that he acted recklessly because he was drunk and did not intend to kill Solberg.
