After he finally stopped the truck, Vechirko was dragged and bloodied by people who viewed his actions as a deliberate attack. Others intervened to protect him from the beating and held Vechirko until they could hand him over to the police.
investigation
On Thursday morning, the Hennnepin County Prosecutor’s Office announced that Vechirko, who lives in Otsego, will face one count of criminal vehicle operation, a felony misdemeanor, and another of threats of violence, a felony.
The highway was supposed to have been blocked that night to protect protesters demanding justice for George Floyd, who was killed less than a week earlier. Vechirko, who was delivering to and from a gas station, entered the highway via a ramp that had not yet been barricaded.
Various collected video
“Various videos collected show that in addition to the large crowd, there were several vehicles stopped on I-35W northbound as the highway approached the bridge and that several vehicles were driving the wrong way down a freeway entrance ramp; indicators that something was happening later. ”
Vechirko later admitted that he had seen cars stop on their way into the crowd. Investigators also recreated the same Vechirko route on I-35W to show that he would have seen the protesters, who at the time had stopped to sit on the sidewalk, in plenty of time to stop his truck.
