Who was Bethany Vincent ?

An ex-boyfriend faces two life sentences after being convicted of the murder of a mother and her nine-year-old autistic son.

Daniel Boulton, 30, carried out the brutal murders just one day after sending his ex-girlfriend Bethany Vincent a text message saying “nightmare on Holme Street”.

The next day, he repeatedly stabbed the 26-year-old and her son Darren Henson after walking 28 miles from Skegness to her home in Louth, Lincolnshire.

A jury heard Boulton calmly smoking a cigarette in the garden after carrying out the murders and walked away leaving behind a “distressed” nine-month-old boy.

He then led police on a manhunt until the next day, holding up a cabin where he stole alcohol and food and stabbing an off-duty police officer in the leg.

He was tasered and arrested at a nearby farm in Hallington after trying to hijack two cars and encouraging armed officers to shoot him.

Boulton, who did not testify during his trial, admitted to manslaughter but denied both murders, telling a psychiatrist that “autopilot did the work for me.”

But the jury rejected Boulton’s ‘lost control’ case because of his personality disorder and took just two hours to convict him of both murders.

Mrs. Vincent’s mother, Caroline Vincent, and DJ’s father, Kieran Henson, were among those watching from the public gallery.

When the guilty verdicts were handed down there were shouts of ‘yes’ from the public gallery. Boulton will be sentenced tomorrow at 11 am.

Judge Mr. Justice Pepperall told Boulton: ‘You have been convicted of the brutal murders of Bethany Vincent and her nine-year-old son, Darren Henson.

The only sentences I can dictate by law are life imprisonment.

He was told in his trial that Boulton developed a “hate” for DJ, who was autistic, and said that he wanted to end the bloodline of Ms. Vincent.

Boulton walked from his hostel in Skegness to Mrs Vincent’s home in Louth, where he “wandered for hours” on 31 May.

The day before, at 4 p.m. m., he sent Mrs. Vincent a text message that said “nightmare on Holme street.”

Ms. Vincent’s body in her bedroom

Addressing the jury in her closing speech, Prosecuting Attorney Katherine Goddard QC said: “That’s what he said.”

Shocked emergency workers found Ms. Vincent’s body in her bedroom shortly after 8 p.m.

DJ, who had slept in his favorite Chelsea shirt, was also found dead upstairs.

In addition to being stabbed through the heart, both Ms. Vincent and DJ sustained blunt force injuries.

Other injuries to DJ’s legs were consistent with a man with a knife chasing him up the stairs.

During the trial, Caroline Vincent, Bethany’s mother and DJ’s grandmother, described how the three of them had enjoyed a “bedtime chat” on Facetime shortly before Boulton kicked his way onto the property and brought carry out the murders.

Ms Vincent, who gave evidence in the screenless courtroom just a couple of yards from Boulton, said Bethany and DJ “were very happy”.

She told the jury: “DJ was wearing the Chelsea football shirt, he was going to sleep in it.”

Mrs. Vincent also revealed that Mrs. Vincent was due to move house just four days later to an address unknown to Boulton.

Jurors heard after the murders that Boulton spent the night on the run.

He at one point broke into a vacant cabin in Hubbards Hills, outside Louth, where he stole some alcohol, clothing and food and left a note that read: “I, Daniel Boulton, take full responsibility.”

The next day he assaulted off-duty police officer PC Stephen Dennis, who was walking his dog near Hubbards Hill, Louth, and tried to arrest him.

Miss Goddard said: ‘On the morning of June 1, an off-duty police officer, PC Dennis, was walking his dog near the bungalow.

“He saw that Mr. Boulton was talking to another dog walker, an elderly woman, which made him concerned for her safety, so he approached Mr. Boulton.

‘There was a brief confrontation, exchange of blows between the two men, before Mr. Boulton ran off pursued by PC Dennis and there was a second confrontation.

‘During the second confrontation, Mr. Boulton drew a knife and stabbed PC Dennis in the leg.

“Once again, Mr. Boulton ran away, but PC Dennis managed to contact his colleagues and soon the area was inundated with police.”

Boulton opened the door of a car carrying a couple and a young child, but fled after the father began “flapping his arms” and then tried to get into a vehicle driven by farm manager Greta Roberts.

Ms. Roberts described how she sped away after Boulton ran out of a silage shed with a rope around her neck and tried to get into his car.

A short time later, Boulton was cornered on a farm and tasered after trying to get some of the armed officers to shoot him.

Miss Goddard said that Boulton had previously expressed his intent to kill and proceeded to Louth on foot, where he decided not to harm the other child in the house.

“He was a man who had planned his actions, that he was in total control of them,” Miss Goddard added.

Jurors heard that Boulton had a troubled childhood, was repeatedly expelled from school and described his father as a “football thug who drank too much.”

He held a number of short-term jobs, including one at an arcade, but hadn’t worked since 2019 and admitted to being a regular gamer who began drinking heavily at the age of 13 and getting into regular fights.

Two psychiatrists agreed that Boulton suffered from dissocial personality disorder, but the prosecution argued that he was still capable of carefully planning the murders.

Boulton told defense psychiatrist Dr. Pablo Vandenabeele that he arrived at Ms. Vincent’s home at noon on May 31, but she “threw him out” and he returned later.

Once inside, Boulton said he begged Ms. Vincent, but she kicked him and laughed at him, so he went to the kitchen to get a knife.

“I guess I wanted to threaten her, I wanted Romeo and Juliet, I probably just wanted to kill myself,” Boulton said.

“It was like I wasn’t there, autopilot did the work for me.” Boulton added: “It was like she walked into the knife.”

He then went up to DJ’s bedroom and inflicted the first wounds on his temple. “The first initial stabs was not me,” Boulton told Dr. Vandenabeele.

The jury heard that Ms Vincent began dating Boulton in March 2019 and that the relationship initially went well.

Boulton became increasingly violent with Ms. Vincent

But Boulton became increasingly violent with Ms. Vincent and repeatedly broke a restraining order that prevented any contact between them.

The jury heard that Ms. Vincent’s previous relationship with DJ’s father, Kieran Henson, broke down when he was just a little boy, but Ms. Vincent described him as an “excellent father” who watched his son the weekends and holidays.

During her testimony, Ms. Vincent admitted that Boulton initially “seemed like a smart, nice guy.”

The good period lasted ‘a few months’, until her daughter became distant and quit her job, Ms. Vincent told the jury.

“She didn’t want me to go around so much,” Mrs. Vincent added. “He (Boulton) stayed a lot.”

Ms Vincent said the relationship became ‘on and off’ and that she would try to visit her daughter when Boulton was not there.

“I knew I wasn’t treating my daughter right,” Mrs. Vincent told the jury. She didn’t like her.

After an incident on High Holme Road where she called the police, Boulton was the subject of a restraining order.

Mrs. Vincent told the jury: ‘I got my daughter back.’

But Boulton continued to contact Vincent, sending him nearly 900 messages the weekend before the murders.
