Who was Bethany Haines?

David Haines’ daughter will come face to face with the man accused of kidnapping and torturing her father for the first time, and has said she wanted his killers “hanged from a tree”.

Bethany Haines will be present in Virginia this week when a US federal judge finally hears the case against El Shafee Elsheikh, who is on trial for the deaths of Americans James Foley, Steven Sotloff, Kayla Mueller and Peter Kassig.

Bethany Haines was a teenager when her father, David, a British aid worker, was beheaded in Syria by the Isis kidnap gang known as the Beatles. Today, more than 7½ years later, she will kiss her own son, Aiden, 6, goodbye in Scotland and fly to America to face one of her father’s alleged tormentors.

Charged

While Elsheikh has not been charged in the United States in Haines’s death because the United States lacks jurisdiction, he is believed to have participated in the kidnapping, torture and beheading of 27 British, American and other foreign hostages in Syria.

Speaking to The Sunday Telegraph, the daughter of Mr Haines, the 44-year-old former RAF engineer and aid worker who was captured by ISIS in 2013 and beheaded the following year, said she never thought Elsheikh would be captured, and much less would he be judged.

“That we’ve gotten to this point feels like a miracle,” she told the newspaper before traveling to Virginia from her home in Perthshire.

The 24-year-old has prepared a victim impact statement that she plans to read in court. Giving an advance to the Telegraph, she said she would say the alleged Elsheikh murders had nothing to do with his religion.

“No matter what you say, this is not about religion, you brutally murdered good and innocent people, and now you have to live with it for the rest of your life,” Ms. Haines plans to tell him, she said.

Mrs. Haines says that as much as she wants to see Elsheikh see justice, she also hopes that he will eventually reveal the location of his father’s body.

Interview

In an October 2020 interview, Haines’ brother Mike said, “Hate is the choice. We all have the power not to hate.

He told The Independent that he had started working on fighting extremism, adding: “I knew I had to do something: my brother’s murder was about hate, it was about division.”

“My brother’s life was taken, but if I could get someone off a path of hate and help them choose a different path, we will have won.”

However, Bethany told MailOnline last year: ‘My uncle and I have very different views and opinions. These two men took my father from me and they took my son’s grandfather from him. I will always hate them.

She has not changed her mind, she told The Sunday Telegraph that she wanted them ‘hanged from a tree’ and said the prison would not change them.
