Who is Benjamin Jeffrey Smith?

Benjamin Jeffrey Smith, a self-described antisocial train driver with a trail of disturbing social media posts, has been named as the Portland, Oregon man who is under suspicion in the mass shooting of five people that left a man dead. Black Lives Matter protester.

Smith has not been named a suspect by authorities; he was named by OregonLive, which reported that witnesses identified him as the shooter. A member of the “furry” community describes him as a local “furry” who goes by the name of Polybun. He is also known as Ben Smith and was also shot, leaving him critically injured, the newspaper reported. Police have released few details of what they described as a chaotic scene.

Smith’s roommate told Opd.org: “He talked about wanting to go shoot commies and antifa all the time. He was just a sad, angry guy… he talked about wanting to do this for a while. He was mad at the mask mandates, he was mad at the fucking liberals.” He worked at the Peninsula Iron Works.

On Reddit, Ben Smith, writing as Polybun, wrote: “I don’t like crowds, I’m not the artsy type, and I’m pretty anti-social. I’m a machinist by trade, I build electronics and hot rods for fun.” Screenshots of posts under his name surfaced on Telegram and other accounts.

According to anti-fascist researchers on Twitter and OregonLive, who confirmed Polybun’s name with his roommate, Smith made anti-Semitic comments and praised Kyle Rittenhouse, the Kenosha teen acquitted in the shootings of three people at a protest/riot in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

Career

According to OregonLive, Benjamin Smith is “a 43-year-old machinist who has lived for 14 years across the street from Normandale Park.”

The newspaper reported that Smith’s brother told the paper that he had, as OregonLive put it, “become increasingly angry at the demonstrations in the Northeast Portland neighborhood.”

Smith was also upset about citywide protests, homelessness in the area, COVID-19 health “mandates” and he was known to “collect guns,” the newspaper reported.

Disturbing Social Media Posts

Smith also had a Reddit thread called “Polybun.” A review of Heavy found these comments:

“Censorship is never okay, no matter the reason. For you.”

On the story of a man who shot his neighbors over a dispute with a snowplow: “fuck whatever. People who just willfully disrespect another’s property, and then talk shit to them after they’ve done it. F*** ’em, I got what they fucking deserved. The world is better off without your entitled son of a bitch.”

He also wrote of the fired couple, “hahahaha two dipsh*** just learned why they don’t talk shit**. Nor is it a pity that his lesson was short-lived. good trip to the bad trash. As the hero of this story says, they should have kept their fucking mouths shut.”

He wrote about dogecoin in very esoteric posts, in which he wrote things like: “I couldn’t get the dogecoin core up and running in a command line only way. I couldn’t figure it out, and got drunk half way through and gave up. So I put a basic graphical user interface on it and turned on the graphical client.”

He also wrote about classic cars and that he grew up in Indiana. In one thread, he wrote that his father smelled like “Jim Beam and failure.” He also wrote about Burning Man: “For those who think Burning Man is completely unique… well, just 452 miles down I-80, and just 2 weeks before Burning Man is another one of the best things to happen on the planet.” “.

Smith had a business at one point called Polyhead.net. Online records show that he was born in Indiana.

Witness

In the press release, Portland Police wrote: “The scene was extremely chaotic and multiple witnesses were uncooperative with responding officers. Most of the people at the scene left without speaking to police. Detectives believe a large number of people either witnessed what happened or recorded the incident as it unfolded. This is a very complicated incident, and investigators are trying to put this puzzle together without having all the pieces.”
Authorities have not confirmed that detail. “I got hit four times and lucky to be alive,” the Twitter user wrote.

Another Twitter user wrote: “We were unarmed road safety volunteers who were not with any protesters. Four women trying to de-escalate and he unloaded a 45 on us because he didn’t like being asked to leave and stop calling us terrorist c*nts. We were in high visibility and dressed. He murdered a disabled woman… He was a white man in his 50s and 60s. The exchange lasted less than two minutes. He came there to kill us, I’m sure. He thought we were protesters.

Smith’s Roommate Said

Smith’s roommate, Kristine Christenson, told OPB that Smith let her stay with him for free initially, saying, “When I first moved in, he seemed fine. Actually, he wasn’t that bad of a man.”

She told the site that he became more “radicalized” during the Donald Trump administration. She heard him “shouting racial slurs in his room and making fun of women,” the site reported.

“As the years went by, he became more and more radical. He just got angrier and angrier,” Christenson told OPB. “I haven’t felt comfortable living with him for a while. I didn’t feel safe with him, especially in the last two years with the whole COVID thing. I think that made him even angrier.”

Christenson told OregonLive of a similar account, saying, “He went from ‘Cop FU’ to ‘Blue Lives Matter’ in the last year.” She described him as “a very ‘flyy’ guy who made me uncomfortable.”

His brother, Aurthur Killion, told OregonLive that Smith “had multiple problems with protesters in his neighborhood. He said he and others had been personally threatened in the past. He said that he was ready to defend himself.”

Killion added about his brother: “He didn’t love them. But he is not a right wing nut. He is a master machinist.

Knightly Posted About Black Lives Matter & Kyle Rittenhouse on Facebook

His Facebook page says he’s from New Orleans, Louisiana, and lives in Portland, Oregon. She posted information about feeding “the homeless” in Portland and efforts to get winter clothing to people in need.

In October, she wrote on Facebook: “We are no better than Mississippi, et al. Oregon is also riddled with racism, on every level.” She wrote about the street art that was painted, writing, “White frailty is not ‘patriotism.'”

Mayor Ted Wheeler said in a statement that the city’s “collective sadness and frustration” over the shooting “fuels my commitment to do everything in my power to reduce the gun violence that is traumatizing our beloved city,” according to NBCNews.

Knightly’s loved ones and friends posted tributes to her on social media. “My morning started with a friend coming to our house to tell us that our friend June Knightly was killed in the shooting that happened in NE Portland at the park at 55th and Halsey. I am stunned and very sad,” wrote a woman on Facebook.

Another person wrote, “update: the woman she killed was 60 years old, a lovely person who was a help to many, a beautiful soul who only represented care and peace. June Knightly — T-rex — we won’t forget. the other seriously injured are beautiful and wonderful people through and through. I’m crying.”

According to OregonLive, Knightly’s wife, Katherine Knapp, told the newspaper that Knightly began protesting after George Floyd marches passed by her home. They worked to protect other protesters from violence. Knightly was a cancer survivor. “She started doing that naturally and then it became her mission,” Knapp told the newspaper.

Of the suspect, Knapp told the newspaper: “She would have been the one who talked to him to narrow things down. She was really good at it and she was trying to be human with him and trying to understand.
