Who was Barry Cryer?

COMEDY legend Barry Cryer has died at the age of 86.

The much-loved British comedian, actor and writer passed away while heartfelt tributes poured in for him.

The legend has appeared on BBC Radio 4’s I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue since its inception in 1972.

Career

Barry, born in Leeds in 1935, won an OBE in 2001 for services to comedy, where he was told by the Queen to “keep making people laugh”.

Barry Cryer was hired as a variety actor while appearing in a college revue, before working with David Frost on Frost Report.

He began his career at London’s famous Windmill Theater and wrote with and for the biggest names in British comedy.

His early television appearances were bolstered by a series of panel shows, with Cryer’s comedic timing on That’s Showbusiness, Blankety Blank and What’s My Line.

And the legend has appeared on BBC Radio 4’s I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue since its inception in 1972.

Barry also wrote for many showbiz legends including Sir Bruce Forsyth, The Two Ronnies and Morcambe and Wise.

The comedian married his wife Theresa in 1962 and has four children, seven grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Just a few weeks ago, Barry began conquering new media at the age of 86 and started a podcast with his son Bob called Now, Where Were We?

Cryer said in 1998: “I haven’t had a career, just a series of incidents. Good luck has followed me all my life.”

His career in the entertainment industry spanned decades, and famous fans and friends flocked to social media to pay tribute to the legend.

Paying tribute, Piers Morgan said this morning: “RIP Barry Cryer, 86.

“Such a warm, funny and talented man. A giant of British comedy. Thanks for all the laughs, Barry.”

Stephen Fry tweeted: “Such sad news, one of the absolute greats of British comedy, Barry Cryer, is no more.

He had worked with everyone and everyone he worked with loved him.

“I will sorely miss the happy company of him, and the regular phone calls from him: he gave you a joke piece of jewelry with each one.”

Added Jon Holmes: “RIP The legend that is Barry Cryer. Who else is going to call me up and tell me old jokes that only he could make funny, now? What sad news.”
