Who is Barry Bennett Ramey ?

A Florida Proud Boys member is accused of pepper spraying a police officer during the Capitol riot, and then threatening an FBI agent who was investigating his role in the January 6 attack.

Barry Bennett Ramey, 38, is also accused in Justice Department documents of being a member of the South Florida branch of the Proud Boys.

Barry Bennett Ramey Arrested and Charged

Ramey was arrested on April 21 in Plantation, Florida, exactly one year after the FBI’s Washington field office first published the photo of him seeking information regarding the riot.

According to the criminal affidavit in the case, Ramey is accused of spraying a ‘pepper spray-like’ substance in the direction of an officer on a stairwell between the Lower West and Upper West terraces of the Capitol at 1:48 p.m. January 6th

During the January 6 riots, Ramey can be seen in several videos that were posted on the Parler social media site. Ramey wears a black coat, a black hat with an American flag on it, a black gaiter mask with an American flag on it, he is clean shaven. When he takes off his hat, Ramey can be seen with a buzz cut haircut.

Around 24 members of the Proud Boys have been indicted for their alleged roles in the Capitol riot. The group has described themselves as ‘Western Chauvinists’ while in Canada they have been classified as a ‘terrorist entity.’

Another group with ties to the riot, the Oath Keepers, have seen dozens of members of their organization arrested in relation to the investigation. The Oath Keepers are described by the Southern Poverty Law Center as ‘one of the largest far-right antigovernment groups in the U.S. today.’

One member of that group, Joshua James, is accused of providing security to Donald Trump advisor Roger Stone on January 6, 2021. In January 2022, 11 members of the Oath Keepers were indicted for seditious conspiracy.

Ramey is facing charges of assault on federal law enforcement officers with a deadly or dangerous weapon, obstructing law enforcement, entering or remaining on restricted grounds with intent to impede, knowingly engaging in an act of physical violence while using or carrying a deadly or dangerous weapon and an act of physical violence on Capitol grounds.

On the same day that Ramey was due to appear in court, two other men, military veteran James Mault and Cody Mattice, pleaded guilty to pepper spraying police officers, reports WUSA.

In a press release announcing Ramey’s charges, the DOJ said, ‘nearly 800 individuals have been arrested in nearly all 50 states for crimes related to the breach of the U.S. Capitol.’

Investigation

Ramey was found to have left a Google review for the hotel he stayed at in the D.C. area. in January 2021. The hotel manager was interviewed as part of the investigation.

After spraying one officer, Ramey then sprayed the same substance on another officer.

“Both officers reported that the spray disoriented them and caused them to lose their sight,” the Justice Department said in a news release.

During the investigation, the FBI agent handling the case gave his business card to an acquaintance of Ramey’s. The agent testified in documents that he received a phone call from Ramey.

On the call, Ramey said: ‘Is this Mr. Nougaret? And he still lives at [his affiant’s address]’. The declarant is the special agent who leads the investigation.

Documents indicate that a phone linked to Ramey was used in the vicinity of the US Capitol building on January 6.

Additionally, the FBI investigation found that Ramey left a Google review for the Hilton Arlington hotel in January 2021. The hotel is located seven miles from the United States Capitol.

The agent investigating Ramey later received a text message that included the location number from the agent’s previous license. When the agent responded by asking who was sending the message, the response read, ‘Check that VIN number.’ ;)’

The phone number in the text message exchange belonged to a disposable phone company.

Ramey’s name appeared on a master list of members of the Proud Boys in South Florida, according to the documents. He joins a list of current and former members who are accused of involvement in the events of January 6.
