De Montfort University Leicester’s Stephen Lawrence Research

Speaking at a public event organized by De Montfort University’s Stephen Lawrence Research Center in Leicester on Wednesday, he said: ‘When I first heard about the report, my first thought was that it has pushed back [the fight against] the racism 20 years or more.

‘I think if you were to talk to someone whose employer speaks to them in a certain way, where would you go with that now?

‘If a person is ready for a promotion and has been denied that, where does he go with it now?

‘You know, all these things that we’ve been working on and proving that there is structural racism: We talk about the pandemic when you look at how many of our people have died, all the nurses, the doctors, the front-line staff, from Covid, and to have this report denying that those people suffered … they are denying that people like my son were murdered because of racism and the fact that it took 18 years for justice to be served. The report denies all those problems.

Those people who marched for Black Lives Matter? He is denying all that. About George Floyd? All that is denied.

‘So those who sit behind this report (say) that racism does not exist or that it no longer exists need to speak to young people who are constantly arrested and searched on the street. They need to talk to those young people. ‘

Baroness Lawrence continued: “They (the authors of the report) are basically out of touch with reality.

That’s what it all comes down to. When you are privileged, you don’t have those experiences.

‘My son was murdered for racism and that cannot be forgotten. Once you start covering it up, you are giving the racists the green light.

‘You imagine what will happen tomorrow. What will happen in our streets with our young people? He’s giving racists the green light. ‘
