Salt Lake County Assistant District Attorney Marc Mathis told KSL prior to the verdict that Ajayi had no clear motive for Lück’s murder. The killer admitted that he planned to kill her after seeing her on the dating site, but before meeting her in person.

“The only conclusion that the evidence can suggest is that Ayoola Ajayi just wanted to know what it’s like to kill someone,” Mathis said Friday.

“Tragically, he chose her for Mackenzie Lueck and her family. It was murder in itself.

Lueck had just gotten off a plane in California, where she had just attended her grandmother’s funeral, when she drove a Lyft to a nearby park late at night on June 17, 2019 to meet Ajayi.

Authorities found Lueck’s body buried in a shallow grave in July 2019.
