Who is Astro Waetford ?

Six men, including the uncle of Australian pop star Jai Waetford, have been arrested for an allegedly failed scheme to import illegal drugs through Sydney Airport.

Astro Waetford, 36, has been indicted for his role in a syndicate that allegedly planned to smuggle banned drugs into Australia from the cargo bed of an international flight.

Among those arrested are a current employee and five former employees of the ground handling company Dnata, owned by Emirates airline.wikipedia

The men were arrested on October 13, and police alleged that the members were communicating via encrypted AN0M phones.

Arrested and Charged

The alleged union members are six of the other 29 ‘trusted members’ who have been arrested in Australia as part of Operation Ironside, the Daily Telegraph reported.

The police deployed an encrypted application known as AN0M in the criminal underworld that collected more than 25 million messages from users and led to 300 arrests.

Police arrested Mende Trajkoski, 42, a former Dnata employee who was recently a part-time courier driver at the airline.

His co-worker Nikolao Misa, 37, is the director of the well-known security company Shield Security and was also arrested.

Both have been accused of directing one or more activities of a criminal organization that was involved in the importation of controlled drugs at the border.

The third man charged is Elias Hachem, 47, who claims on his social media that he worked for Alpha Flight Services, now renamed Dnata catering.

Astro Waetford is the fourth of the six defendants and the uncle of singer and pop actor Jai Waetford, who rose to fame after a stint on the X Factor in 2013.

There is no suggestion that the pop star is related to the union.

The former Dnata employee was charged with associating with members of a criminal organization involved in the importation of drugs, for the purpose of supporting serious organized criminal activity.
Officers also arrested Ali Khanafer, 31, and Frank Meredith, 32, who were charged along with Hachem of providing material support and resources to assist a criminal organization involved in importing drugs.

Meredith’s wife, Sibel Ergun, was previously charged with handling proceeds of crime after police seized $ 100,000 in cash from a Liverpool home in June.

Criminal

Ms. Ergun is not accused of being involved in the criminal syndicate.

Police will allege that the six men were members of the criminal syndicate and planned to ‘import an unknown quantity of controlled drugs at the border hidden inside a cargo box in the hold of a commercial aircraft on March 7, 2020.’

“The import did not occur due to reduced flight times as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, but the union carried out significant planning for this effort,” a police statement alleged.

“This included distributing encrypted AMOM devices to each of the six members and finding suitable exchange locations within the Sydney Airport area of operations.”

All six men will go to the front of the court next month.
