Actress Ashley Judd appeared on Instagram Live from her hospital bed in the Democratic Republic of Congo and revealed that she suffered “massive and catastrophic injuries” that landed her in the intensive care unit.

In it, Judd, 52, spoke to Nicholas Kristof of the New York Times. “Talking to @Ashley_Judd about her crash in Congo and more,” Kristof wrote on Instagram. “Ashley wants to change the conversation of what happened to the needs in the Congo and how to help.”
She said she was “in a really horrible accident in the Congo”. She said that she wanted it to be a “larger conversation” beyond what happened to Judd. She said that she almost lost a leg.
Judd Revealed She Was ‘in an ICU Trauma Unit
In the Instagram Live video, Judd revealed that he had an accident in the Congo. “I am very much in love. I have a lot of compassion ”and gratitude, Judd said in the video.
She told Kristof that she was “in an ICU trauma unit in beautiful South Africa, which has taken me in from the Congo – a country that I love deeply and that is unfortunately not equipped to deal with massive catastrophic injuries like the that I had”.
She continued: “And the difference between a Congolese person and me is the disaster insurance that allowed me, 55 hours after my accident, to reach an operating table in South Africa.” She acknowledged that she was privileged in the video.
Judd said she had a “really bad accident.”
Judd said that she was in the rainforest because of the bonobos, which she claims are an endangered great ape. They exist only in the Congo. She said they are “egalitarian, they are matriarchal” and lack sexual coercion. She said the apes “offer us hope … We have a lot to learn from them.” She said her partner has a camp there. “We are there every year, twice a year … I was doing what I always do, getting up at 4:30 in the morning with two of our trackers … walking in the dark.” She said the lamp on her head was not working properly.
There was a fallen tree “on the road that I didn’t see,” she said. “When I was breaking my leg, I knew it was breaking.”
Judd Said the Injury Left Her ‘Howling’
According to the video, Judd explained that he broke his leg when he tripped over a tree. She said that she spent “five hours lying on the forest floor” and that it took her a while to be evacuated. She described an arduous journey that took her back to the camp, and then carried her away in a hoisted hammock.
The whole experience was “incredibly heartbreaking,” she said. She bit into a stick while she “howled like a wild animal” to deal with the pain, and described her leg as “very misshapen.” She said that she lay in great pain hour after hour.
She went into shock and was taken out of the rain forest.
She said that people in the Congo lack a simple pill to relieve pain, emphasizing that she had medical care that not everyone has.
