According to authorities, Ashley Howard left her son in her vehicle for 14 hours and the sun shone for eight hours

A 21-year-old Montana mother convicted of the murder of her young son in a car in 2018 was sentenced to 20 years in prison this week.

Ashley Howard was tried on Monday, two months after lawyers convicted her of murdering her 2-year-old son, to find out her fate, court documents show.

The judge ruled that Howard would spend the next 20 years in the state prison in Billings, Montana.

Howard is receiving a two-year compensation that Glendive’s wife has already taken into custody.

He was not initially guilty of the murder of Caleb Hopkins, who had spent more than eight hours in his car in late June 2018.

The Billings Gazette reports that Howard dropped Caleb in his car the night of June 25, 2018. He didn’t pick him up until 1 p.m. the following afternoon.

Authorities said Howard spent the night partying with friends and slept with a hangover the next day.

Howard took the boy to the hospital on June 26, where doctors recorded a body temperature of 107 degrees.

He died two days later after flying to Billings Hospital, where he spent the last hours of his life.

Caleb died of hyperthermia caused by overheating.

“I find it difficult to say that I killed my son,” he said, “because no one wants to be the reason their son is no longer there. I miss him every day. I know that I still love my son and I still miss him. ”

Caleb’s grandmother, Marsha Hopkins, also attended the hearing.

“You have to live with the fact that you killed Caleb alone,” Hopkins said in her warning. “I think you wanted it? No. Do I think you could have stopped him? Insurance. You knew what could have happened if you had left it in the car and made that decision. ”

After his release, Howard will have ten years of probation.
