Who was Ashley Dias ?
Ashley Dias a clinical research associate at a biotech company, had been filling in for a fellow volunteer at Stanley Middle School in Lafayette on Wednesday when the van hurtled toward a group of children crossing the street.
Witnesses told the San Francisco Chronicle that Dias was quick to push the group of students out of range of the car, sacrificing himself when the truck knocked him over and dragged her body underneath it.
One of the children suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital as a precautionary measure.
Police have yet to identify the driver of the van, but ABC 7 reported that the driver was the grandmother of one of the students who was interviewed by police and is cooperating with the investigation.
Her son declined an interview with the news station, but said: “We are incredibly saddened and devastated by this incredibly horrible accident.”

Police responded to the scene quickly after Dias sacrifices himself to save a group of students.
Paramedics rushed to the scene to free Ashley from under the car and try to save her life.
The Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement that residents helped Lafayette officers remove Dias from under the vehicle.
Officers administered CPR until fire department personnel relieved them. He later he was transferred to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased ”.
Dias’s parents, Gloria and Fabio Dias, said they had just spoken to his son hours before the accident.
‘I met one of the parents at the hospital. And he said, ‘Your son saved my daughter’s life,’ ” said Gloria Dias, Ashley’s mother.
“He is a hero and he risked his life to save a student.”

They described his son as a kind and helpful man who enjoyed walks and tried new foods.
Fabio Dias expressed frustration at the reckless driver and said his son’s reflective vest and large flag should have let the driver know the children were crossing.
And despite that, the car comes, hits him and kills him. And I lost my son, ” Fabio said. “He was doing his job as a crossing guard.”
Dias, a native of San Francisco, is survived by his parents, two brothers and his niece. He attended Stanley Middle School before moving on to Acalanes High School in Lafayette.
