Who is Arturo Marin-Sotelo ?

An Apex man has been arrested and charged with murder in connection with the death of a Wake County officer.

Wake County Sheriff Gerald Baker said 29-year-old Arturo Marin-Sotelo was charged Thursday with the Aug. 11 slaying of Officer Ned Byrd.

Byrd, 48, was a K-9 officer who had been with the sheriff’s office for 13 years.

Killed

Sheriff Baker said he was killed after stopping near Battle Bridge and Auburn Knightdale roads in Raleigh shortly after 11 p.m.

Sheriff’s Office spokesman Eric Curry said Byrd answered a domestic call less than a mile away and then entered his notes into the system.

Byrd was unresponsive to multiple attempts to register, another officer was sent to search and found him shot outside his squad car with his K-9 still inside the car.

Murder Charged

On Thursday, Wake County District Attorney Lorrin Freeman was asked if authorities would seek the death penalty against Marin-Sotelo.

“That’s something that we as a state will look at the evidence in this case and review and make the determination. I anticipate there will be an announcement sometime in the next 90 days,” Freeman said. he said.

Freeman said authorities expect another person to appear this week in a first court appearance on a murder charge.

Baker and several Wake County deputies attended the Marin-Sotelo court appearance on Thursday.

Deputy Ned Byrd found a shot in the early hours of August 12, 2022

A series of calls on the night of Aug. 11 led Byrd and his K-9 partner to a rural area off Battle Bridge Road in southeastern Wake County, according to Baker.

Byrd, 48, was found dead around 1 a.m. m. of August 12. He had been shot multiple times and authorities believe he was killed about two hours before he was found.

Marin-Sotelo and Alder Alfonso Marin were taken into custody Tuesday in Burke County, west of Wake County, for questioning about Byrd’s murder. A cousin of the two men told WSOC-TV that they are brothers.

WSOC-TV reported that the North Carolina State Highway Patrol detained the two men during two separate traffic stops along Interstate 40. The station reported that federal marshals took the two men into custody.
