Antonio Gozzini Biography
Who is Antonio Gozzini?
Antonio Gozzini, 81, stabbed 63-year-old literature teacher Cristina Maioli to death in October 2019 while she slept.
Gozzini then looked at the body for several hours in apparent disbelief at what he had done, before calling a friend and saying, “Cristina is dead.” And soon I will die too.
Prosecutor Claudia Passalacqua asked the court for life imprisonment for voluntary manslaughter aggravated by “premeditation, cruelty and conjugal bond.”
During the trial, the prosecution and the defense agreed that Gozzini ‘suffered from an evident delusional jealousy that severed his relationship with reality and caused him to have an irrepressible homicidal impulse’.
It was on this basis that the court ruled in favor of the defence, that Gozzini was suffering from a delusion.
The prosecution appealed the acquittal, and a Brescia appeals court later upheld the decision that the murder was not a voluntary act.
The prosecution had sought a 21-year life sentence for Gozzini, arguing that an acquittal would send the message that any jealous man could murder his wife.
However, the defense successfully argued that Gozzini was not simply a jealous man, but a man suffering from a pathology that he had never exhibited prior to the murder and that he could not be held legally responsible.
Gozzini has been ordered transferred from prison to a hospital facility for offenders suffering from mentally and socially dangerous disorders.
