Who was Anthony Clawson?

A TEENAGE GIRL was “swallowed” after falling to his death in a power plant while watching the sunset with his friends.

Anthony Clawson, 18, and three of his friends were visiting the Market Street Power Plant on Friday night when their trip ended in tragedy.

Anthony Clawson, 18, fell five stories to his death while hanging out at a power plant with his friends.

Causes of Death

As the teens climbed back down from the building’s roof, a platform broke, causing Clawson to fall five stories.

The teenager recently graduated from Benjamin Franklin High School and was preparing to attend Louisiana State University to study chemistry.

Clawson died Saturday at University Medical Center from blunt force trauma, according to the Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office.

“You don’t think ‘My son is going to plummet to his death in an industrial building’ when he is set up in every way for a great life,” said Clawson’s mother, Valerie Walker.

Paramedics and a fire department rescue team arrived at the scene shortly after 9 p.m. m. Friday and they reached the teenager by breaking the panels that secured the building.

They arrived at the hospital about 36 minutes later, New Orleans Emergency Medical Services spokesman Janick Lewis said.

A plant spokesman said Clawson’s death was a tragic accident, but added that the area was secured.

“The ground floor is sealed off with metal panels designed to prevent illegal access to vacant buildings,” said Peter Aamodt, an independent property consultant representing the owners.

There are security fences along the perimeter, additional lighting on the site and “No Trespassing” signs.

Aamodt added that there is a “local, independent security company that regularly monitors the site,” but would not say whether security was present the night Clawson went down.

“We are currently investigating how the group that was there on Friday night gained access to the secured property,” Aamodt said.

“We will fully cooperate with everyone involved to determine what happened. We offer our condolences to the families involved.

SWALLOWED’

The four teens were leaving the building just before 9:00 p.m. m. when they noticed someone shining a flashlight on them from below, Walker said.

Clawson was in the front, leading the group and testing the ground as they made their way to the building’s entrance.

It was then that he stepped on a platform and fell to the base of the building.

“I saw him get swallowed up from the ground in front of me,” said Noah Cieutat, Clawson’s friend who was present at the time.

“I couldn’t move for what seemed like a minute.”

The teens ran downstairs and called 911.

According to Cieutat, the trip to the power plant was supposed to be the group’s last hurrah before heading off to college.

“One last great memory,” Cieutat said.

Clawson’s mother said her son had received a full-tuition scholarship to LSU.
