Who was Anthony Adekola ?

Anthony Adekola was walking home from his shift at Marks and Spencer when a group of young men jumped out of two taxis and dragged him down an alley in Colindale, northwest London.

After a brief manhunt, Adekola was repeatedly stabbed more than nine times and died at the scene despite paramedics performing emergency surgery, in what jurors heard may have been a horrific ‘random’ attack.

Following a trial at the Old Bailey, 19-year-old Tajaun Subaran and two 17-year-olds, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, from neighboring Hendon, northwest London, were found guilty of murder.

Jurors were told that Mr. Adekola was in “the wrong place at the wrong time” when he came across a group of youths who had traveled to the rival area of the NW9 zip code.

How old was Anthony Adekola ?

He was 22 year old.

Victim

Mr. Adekola was near his home on the Grahame Park Estate when two taxis arrived and eight young people got out.

CCTV footage showed the group detaining the victim and, after a brief exchange, he turned and ran.

He collided with a stone bollard and fell to the ground on Martlesham Walk as the pursuing group approached.

The group then subjected Mr. Adekola to a brutal attack, stabbing him at least nine times in the face, head, neck, back, chest, arms and legs.

Death

The fatal stab wound to the neck severed the carotid artery and jugular vein. The attackers then returned to the waiting taxis and drove off.

Adekola was found seriously injured and bleeding by his brother and concerned friends of his who retraced his route.

The police arrived at 11:15 p.m. and found him surrounded by people applying pressure to his neck wound.

Doctors carried out emergency surgery at the scene, but despite his best efforts, he was pronounced dead at 11:45 p.m.

Bill Emlyn Jones QC, the prosecutor, told the jury that there was no evidence of a personal connection between the victim and his attackers.

“We are left with the terrible prospect that he was randomly selected and murdered,” he said.

The attackers had come and returned to Hendon, in the NW4 zip code, while the victim was in the NW9 area.

Mr Emlyn Jones said: ‘It is the case of the prosecution that the defendants were in a raid in enemy territory, something that is known as a’ ride ‘.

“ When they got to NW9, they didn’t care who they stabbed, it was enough to show their NW9 rivals that they could show up in enemy territory and attack whoever they wanted. ”

The 22-year-old’s friends paid tribute to him after his death, including a colleague who told the BBC that Adekola’s murder “hurt like nothing else.”

They said, ‘You motivated me to do what I loved the most in life, you lived a fun life and infected others with your smile and subtle charm.’

Following the arrests of the defendants, their electronic devices were examined, the court heard.

Following an Old Bailey trial, Tajaun Subaran who cannot be identified, from neighbouring Hendon, north-west London, were found guilty of murder

A Snapchat message four days after the murder was recovered from the iPad of one of the young men.

With the caption: ‘This is for your own safety,’ it read: ‘Grahame Park and Hendon are having a war because of the stabbing that happened (RIP Lizzy), so when you’re done from skl there’s no more contest it’s straight home because if the Hendon man catches you like hell because they don’t care.

identified

The court heard that the 17-year-old identified himself as a ‘Hendon man’.

Police also recovered text messages from his mother the morning after the murder telling him to return home and accusing him of taking the knives from him.

A black mask that fell at the scene was linked to him by his DNA.

The other 17-year-old defendant had texted ‘F ** d 9 1000 times’ in apparent reference to rival zip code NW9, jury were told.

On another device belonging to the same young man, police found what appeared to be rap lyrics from revenge exercises.

The lyrics said a wish to go to ‘the 9’ and ‘catch me an opp’ (rival) and ‘get them back’.

A letter created about three weeks after the murder referred to being “on the 9th from night until morning.”

He ended with the chilling words: ‘Chasing opps is fun, I love the thrill when I see an opp boy run (sic).’

CCTV footage from the night identified the young man by his clothing.

Both young men agreed to be present but denied being involved in the stabbing.

Subaran was alleged to have helped book the taxis.

Traces of blood on a Subaran trainer matched Mr. Adekola’s DNA.

An examination of the defendants’ phones revealed that they all appeared to have turned them off for half an hour, coinciding with the time of “departure”.

The defendants denied being involved in the attack on Mr. Adekola.

The jury, which deliberated for 21 hours, was dismissed after failing to reach a verdict on a fifth defendant, 20-year-old Christian Medina.

The prosecution asked four weeks to decide whether to request a new trial in his case.
