Her devastated family told the New York Post that Yambo was never seen on the streets and that she was an A student who enjoyed her schoolwork.

She ‘she was a girl who went to school and came straight home. She was never on the street. She was one of the sweetest girls you have ever met,” her aunt Margarita Yambo told the Post.

Family

Her other aunt, Elvia Henriquez, 36, said the ‘loving and caring’ girl’s mother was ‘still in shock’ and ‘hasn’t said much’.

“She’s very incredulous right now,” Henriquez told the New York Post.

Yambo’s childhood best friend, Hazel Cheeseboro, said: “Her mother was heartbroken. She’s trying to hold on, but she doesn’t feel so good. I mean, she just lost her daughter, but she’s trying.

‘She didn’t deserve to be slighted the way she was… I’m heartbroken. She always looked on the bright side, never the bad side of anything. That was her,’ she told the newspaper.

The girl’s mother reportedly arrived on the scene after first responders were unable to resuscitate her daughter.

‘The mother was screaming hysterically. The police were holding her,” the superintendent of a nearby building told the New York Post.

‘I felt her pain in her scream. There is nothing louder than a mother’s cry.

Shooting

The shooting happened outside the South Bronx campus of University Heights High School at East 156th Street and St. Ann’s Avenue.

Police told the New York Daily News the gunman had been arguing with someone across the street when he pulled out his gun and opened fire.

None of the teenagers was the intended target.

Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell described the fatality as “a young woman with a bright future”.

Suspect

Three to six shots were reportedly fired westbound from the suspect standing on the east side of the street.

Law enforcement sources told the New York Post that two men across the street got into an argument before the shots were fired.

“At this point in our initial investigation, brazen criminals opened fire after a dispute,” Sewell said at a brief news conference on Friday.

No arrests have been made and police are now searching for a Hispanic man in his 20s, who was last seen wearing a gray tracksuit and black vest and was seen driving west, authorities confirmed.

A Bronx local Freddy Brown said

it was ‘amazing’, but I wasn’t ‘surprised’.

“No, it’s not a surprise, because shots are heard all the time in this area,” the unidentified local man said. “But it is surprising to hear that there are three small children in the area. You don’t hear of young teens getting shot in the area, but it’s happening everywhere now.

Bronx worker Eddie Rosado also agreed with Brown’s remarks, saying: ‘It’s getting to the point now where it’s an everyday thing. When I was a teenager, this didn’t happen as much, it’s crazy.

Rosado said he was “definitely not” surprised, but he felt safe “for the most part, because I grew up in the Bronx.”

“It’s my environment, but when things like that happen so close, it’s a little hard, it’s difficult,” he said.

Crime in New York City is up nearly 50 percent compared to last year and shooting victims are up 14.5 percent.

“We need more patrols in the area,” Brown said. “I am afraid for my grandchildren.”
