Padilla, who was born on March 22, 1973, is an American politician who serves as the 32nd secretary of state for California. He is also the designated United States Senator to replace Vice President-elect Kamala Harris in the United States Senate. He is the son of Mexican immigrants and the first Latino senator from the state in United States history.
A member of the Democratic Party, Padilla previously served in the California State Senate, representing District 20 after his election in November 2006. Before serving in the Senate, he served more than seven years on the Los Angeles City Council, representing the 7th. district. In 1999, he was elected President of the Los Angeles City Council in July 2001 and held office until December 2005.
On December 22, 2020, Padilla was selected by Governor Gavin Newsom to replace Vice President-elect Harris in the United States Senate. Padilla will be the first Latino senator from California and the first male senator to represent the state since 1992.
After his selection, Padilla said: “I think for the Latino community, it is a historic moment.” The senator’s education includes a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, after which he worked for Hughes Aircraft in Southern California.
