Louisiana police on Tuesday issued an arrest warrant for a man, Anfernee Steele, who allegedly beat his girlfriend’s 4-year-old daughter to death earlier this month.
Anfernee Devante Steele, 21, faces one count of second-degree murder and cruelty to a minor in the murder of Jo’nyri Hawkins, police announced Thursday.
A law enforcement source said Hawkins’s mother had left the girl in Steele’s care at a hotel in the 500 block of Canal Street for a few hours and returned to find the girl unconscious and limping early on October 3. The mother called 911, and the responders first declared her dead.
A law enforcement source told the Times-Picayune that Anfernee Steele, 21, was hired to monitor Jo’nyri Hawkins in a hotel room in New Orleans on October 3. Mom returned to the hotel room a few hours later to find Hawkins. ‘lifeless body and convinced her to call 911.
The first defendants said that Hawkins was killed on the spot. The Orleans Municipal Concentrator’s Office decided he died of violent trauma and called the death murder, according to the source.
Steele claimed that Hawkins had fallen. However, authorities found that the girl’s injuries did not match the fall and were due to physical abuse, the Times-Picayune law enforcement agency said.
The New Orleans Police Department issued a statement confirming that Steele was booked for second degree murder and second degree cruelty to minors.
