Who is Andre Hill?
On December 22, 2020, Andre Hill, 47, was shot and killed by Officer Adam Coy of the Columbus Police Division in Columbus, Ohio. Ohio’s capital city agreed to pay a $ 10 million settlement to the family of Andre Hill, an unarmed black man who was shot and killed by a white Columbus police officer as he exited a garage with a cell phone.

“We understand that due to the actions of this former officer, the Hill family will never be complete,” Columbus City Attorney Zach Klein said in a statement. “No amount of money will return Andre Hill to his family, but we believe this is an important and necessary step in the right direction.”
As part of the agreement, a gym frequented by Hill will be renamed Andre Hill Gymnasium.
Attorneys representing Hill’s family praised the settlement and the gym’s renaming, saying in a statement: “Now everyone involved can begin to heal.”
Hill was visiting a family friend when he was shot just before 2 a.m. Coy and another officer had responded to a neighbor’s non-emergency complaint that someone stopped and started a car outside.

Bodycam footage showed it took Coy just six seconds to open fire.
The footage has no audio because Coy didn’t turn on her camera until after he shot Hill.
According to police, this triggered a “look back” feature on the camera that captures images but not sound.

The video shows Coy lighting a flashlight on Hill as he exits the garage with a cell phone in hand and begins to walk toward the officer and his partner.
In the moments after Hill’s death, additional body camera footage shows that two other Columbus officers turned Hill and handcuffed him before leaving him alone again.
None of them, according to released footage, offered first aid despite Hill barely moving, whimpering and bleeding as he lay on the garage floor.
Hill was rushed to Riverside Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Coy, who had a long history of citizen complaints, was fired on December 28 for not activating his body camera before the confrontation and for failing to provide Hill with medical assistance.
Coy’s attorney previously said that his client “honestly believed that he saw a silver revolver in the individual’s right hand.” No weapon was found at the scene.
