Anchorage mayor Wiki-Anchorage mayor Biogaphy
The mayor of Alaska’s largest city tendered his resignation Tuesday night, four days after a local television station host threatened to report that he had posted nude photos of himself on a website. Ethan Berkowitz flatly denied his allegations, but admitted on Monday he had an inappropriate relationship with Maria Athens, the anchor for a combined Fox / ABC station in Anchorage.
“It is with deep sadness and humility that I resign as mayor of Anchorage Township,” he said in a statement read at the Anchorage Assembly meeting by his chief of staff, Jason Bockenstedt, and then emailed to the media.
“My resignation is the result of unacceptable personal conduct that has compromised my ability to perform my duties with the required focus and confidence,” Berkowitz wrote.
Mayor Berkowitz, concerning inappropriate photos
Mayor Berkowitz, regarding inappropriate photos on a website of minors and threatening communications he received, “said an FBI statement released Tuesday.” Based on that initial investigation, there was no immediate evidence to support a violation of federal law; however, the FBI field office in Anchorage continues to monitor the situation. ”
Athens was arrested Friday afternoon after illegally entering the television studio after being told she could not return there. She allegedly approached the station manager, who the indictment documents identify as her boyfriend, and was arrested by police. Her story never aired.
Athens was charged with assault, criminal mischief, and disorderly conduct. She was released on Monday after posting bail.
Felix Rivera chairman of the Anchorage Assembly
Félix Rivera, Speaker of the Anchorage Assembly, will serve as interim mayor until a special election is held.
Messages left with Berkowitz through his office, with Athens through Facebook and with station management have not been returned to The Associated Press.
Berkowitz was elected to his second three-year term as mayor in 2018. The nonpartisan office is limited to two terms.
Berkowitz, a San Francisco native, is also an Anchorage attorney and businessman. He served as a Democrat in the Alaska House of Representatives from 1997 to 2006, serving the past two years as a minority leader.
