Allen Minish Biography
Who is Allen Minish?
Allen Minish was alone and surveying land for a real estate agent in a remote part of the state, putting some numbers into his GPS unit when he noticed the beast walking about 30 feet away.
“I saw him and he saw me at the same time, and it’s scary,” Minish told The Associated Press by phone Wednesday from his hospital bed in Anchorage, a day after the ghastly attack. He suffered a crushed jaw, a scalp wound so deep that the doctor said he could see bone, multiple lacerations, and received 100 stitches after a 4½-hour surgery.

Allen Minish survives horrific bear attack after being bitten in the head
An Alaska man miraculously survived a brown bear mauling that included several bites to the head, a crushed jaw and a cavernous scalp wound, according to reports. Minish also is wearing a patch over his badly wounded right eye. He said the bear inflicted the devastating injuries in an attack that lasted less than 10 seconds early Tuesday near the small community of Gulkana, about 190 miles northeast of Anchorage.
When he bear – which Minish said was larger than 300-pound black bears he has seen before – charged at him, he tried to dodge behind small spruce trees. But that didn’t stop the massive animal, which tore right through them on the path to its terrified victim.
In desperation, Minish held up the pointed end of his surveying pole and pushed it toward the bear to keep it away from him – but it simply knocked it away. The force of the blow knocked Minish to the ground. As he lunged up on top of me, I grabbed his lower jaw from him to pull him away, ”he told the news agency.
I have explained to KTUU that I have tried the maneuver “because if you grab a dog’s lower jaw, it can’t bite you. So I got a hole punched in my hand with its molar, but he couldn’t close his mouth from it. And all he did was scratch my hand with his upper one of him, ”Minish told the station. But then he twisted his head so fast, he knocked my hand free, ”he continued,“ and when he did that, he lunged, grabbed my head, took the first bite, relaxed, and took the second bite, that was stronger. And that’s when I have cracked all the bones and part of my head. ”
Minish said that the moment the bear put its mouth over his skull, he thought, “’Holy s—, this is a big bear!’ When the bear finally let go, Minish turned his face to the ground and put his hands over his head as the animal strolled off. “I realized I was in pretty bad shape because I had all this blood everywhere,” he told The AP.
While on the phone with 911, Minish pulled off his surveyor’s vest and his T-shirt de él, wrapping them around his mangled head in an attempt to stop the bleeding. Minish said he managed to give the dispatcher his exact coordinates from his GPS unit – but even that was an ordeal “because I had so much blood flowing into my eyes and on to the GPS, I kept having to wipe it all off.”
When rescuers finally arrived an hour later, one of them called him a hero after seeing how much blood he had lost. The rescuers tried to carry him to a road that parallels the nearby trans-Alaska pipeline to meet an ambulance, but when that effort failed, they helped walk him a quarter-mile through swamps, brush, and trees to an airport.
He was flown to Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage, where he is listed in good condition. Minish said he had left his gun in his vehicle but that it wouldn’t have mattered anyway because the bear moved on him too fast for it to have been of use.
He can now add his name to the list of six people he knows who has been attacked by bears in Alaska. I guess I feel lucky, ”Minish said, adding that someone told him he’s better off hurt than dead.
“In all honesty, it wouldn’t have mattered either way. You know, if it killed me, it killed me. I had a good life. I’m moving on. It didn’t kill me, so now let’s move on to the other direction of trying to stay alive, ”he added.
