Is Ali Sadpara alive?

Wearing full protective gear to ward off a treacherous mix of high winds and stinging snow, Muhammad Ali Sadpara, along with two other colleagues, began their latest effort last week to scale the world’s second highest peak.

The trio were attempting to reach the 8,611-meter (28,251-foot) summit of Korakarum-2, commonly known as K-2, without supplemental oxygen to make history. However, they lost contact with the base camp when they were only 411 meters from the snowy summit.

Mountain lovers around the world took to social media to pray for their safety shortly after news of the missing trio broke. But prayers were not answered, as rescuers declared them dead after a five-day operation that began on February 6.

They had lost contact within hours after their colleague, the Bulgarian mountaineer Atanas Skatov, fell into a crevasse and died.

Footballer turned climber

Sadpara started his career in the early 1990s as a low-altitude porter, meaning he would only go to base camp, carrying loads with mountaineers.

In 2005, he became a tall porter, which allowed him to climb to the last camp at full height. Just a year later, he was part of a team that climbed Geeshabroom-2, the thirteenth highest mountain in the world at 8,035 meters (26,362 feet) located in Gilgit-Baltistan.

Soccer was his first love and choice, according to Qasim Butt, Sadpara’s childhood friend. He played as a midfielder and contributed to Government College Skardu’s victories for several years.

â € œClimbing was his second choice. He developed a passion for climbing when he started working with international climbers as a porter, which is one of the few sources of income for young people in the area, “Butt, a local journalist, told Anadolu Agency.“Climbing K-2 in the winters and without (supplemental) oxygen was his lifelong dream of his. He was very excited about this expedition, ”his son, Sajid Sadpara, told Anadolu Agency. Sajid was also part of the ill-fated expedition, but had to descend from a height of 8,200 meters due to equipment problems.

“I saw it on February 5 at an elevation of 8,200 meters from where the bottleneck begins (a steep, narrow ravine on the edge of the ice on the glacier’s surface east of the summit). It was a few meters from me, ”recalled Sajid, 23, adding that he“ asked me to use (supplemental) oxygen to scale the bottleneck as the oxygen level had dropped to a dangerous level. These were the last words of him. ”

Sajid, however, had to go downstairs when he discovered that his oxygen tank was not working.
