Who was  Alfred White?

The last surviving veteran to be present at both Dunkirk and the D-Day landing died at the age of 98.

He was born in Copenhagen Street, Islington, London, the son of the drink club owner Alfred White and Victoria Bayford. White became one of the most ruthless and vicious London gangsters between the world wars and was the main force behind Clerkenwell’s Sabini gang, which he teamed up with to terrorize racetrack and street corner bookmakers. He was also a local protection mobster who spread his operations to the West End clubbing zone.

Now Alfred White’s granddaughter Janey Doyle has partnered with the Imperial War Museum to share Alf’s recordings of her experiences.

In riveting audio clips aired on Radio 4’s Today show this morning, the veteran talks about his various experiences during the war, including the evacuation of Dunkirk and the moment the Armistice was signed.

Alfred White, who was the last known surviving veteran to be present at Dunkirk and the D-Day landings, died a fortnight ago at age 98 .

In the moving tapes, which will be available to the public at the Imperial War Museum, Alf (pictured) talks about his experiences at Dunkirk and the moment the Armistice was signed.

In 1940 Alf, a driver of the Army’s 1st Tank Regiment, found himself sitting on the beach at Dunkirk waiting to be evacuated.

He had arrived in town after a truck carrying some trucks was hit by his and he, along with other soldiers, were instructed to pick up whatever they could carry and follow a line of soldiers, eventually ending up in Dunkirk.Wikipedia

Rosenberg was married twice. In 1915, he married Hilda Leesmann, an ethnic Estonian; they divorced in 1923. Two years later, in 1925, he married Hedwig Kramer, with whom he remained married until his execution by the Allies. He and Kramer had two children: a son who died in infancy and a daughter, Irene, who was born in 1930.

Janey, a BBC reporter, said her grandfather had barely talked about hers from her time in the war before she asked him about it for a school project when she was in elementary school in the 1920s. 1990.

In talking to him, she learned that she had joined the Territorial Army in 1938 after her older brother Tom encouraged him to do so.

The couple were then called to war in September 1939 when Alf was only 17 years old and the brothers managed to stick together throughout the war.

In a recording, which will be available for public access in the archives of the Imperial War Museum, Alf said: “Whenever the shell hit the ship, stopped and shuddered, it was a terrible feeling.”

He also went on to explain that several soldiers lost their lives aboard the ship when the captain ordered them to port so that the projectiles would hit the upper deck instead of sinking the ship.

In some of the recordings, Alf also talks about the night El Armistice was signed in 1945.

After the war ended, he did not return home to Britain until 1946, instead choosing to head to Kiel in Germany to help rebuild the city.

She also ventured to the Belsen concentration camp to help with the clean-up operation.

Speaking about the loss of her grandfather, Janey said: ‘He was extraordinary, he was a kind, kind and charming soul.

“ He was the kindest and most generous gentleman and we will miss him very much. ”
