West Mercia police launched a murder investigation into the death of a nine-year-old boy who was found in critical condition last month.
Alfie Steele was found in a home in Worcestershire on February 18 and was airlifted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, where he later died.
A 39-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder, while a 33-year-old woman was detained on suspicion of child neglect.
Both have since been released on bail pending further investigations.
West Mercia police are still treating Alfie’s death as “inexplicable” and say a “full and detailed” investigation is underway.

Speaking for the first time since the tragedy, Alfie’s grandfather, Paul Scott, paid tribute to his grandson, who was a member of The Boys’ Brigade.
He said: ‘We are completely devastated by the loss of Alfie, he had a smile that would melt butter.
“He was intelligent and inquisitive, and brave as a lion; he was a good Christian boy who was full of God.
“He would never walk away from anything and he was not afraid.”
Alfie lived with his mother Carla Scott, who had recently gotten engaged, and his three siblings between the ages of four and 12.
Paul said that Alfie had been a fan of Worcester Warriors Rugby Club and Arsenal FC.

He added: ‘I would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone involved in the investigation, everyone has been very professional and the media has been respectful and has given us time as a family to cry.
“Thank you for the continued support of the community, who have sent teddy bears and good wishes.”
At the tribute, posted via West Mercia Police, Alfie’s beloved brother and two sisters said: “Alfie was a brilliant boy and always creative and imaginative.
“We loved watching videos and playing soccer with him and we’re going to miss telling him to shut up at night.”
They continued: ‘we love him and he will always be in our hearts.’
With investigations still ongoing, West Mercia Police Detective Inspector Ed Slough said: ‘This is a tragic incident in which a child lost his life and our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time. terrible.
Locals marked Alfie’s death by displaying blue teddies and drawings of bears, in their windows.
“We are currently treating the child’s death as inexplicable and are conducting investigations to establish the circumstances.

One said: ‘He was such a smiling and happy boy. He had four brothers, you often saw them all playing outside.
